So I have the samsung un40es6100 120hz tv.

I hook up my computer to it with an hdmi cable. But the 120hz option is not available in the amd video settings.

Am I missing something?

Most "120Hz" TVs will only accept 60Hz in anyway.

Most GPUs are only able to output 60Hz out the HDMI port too.

Take your pick on why you can't go higher ;)

Only Display port and maybe DVI can handle 120hz i think

Bingo. 120Hz TVs generally do not accept 120Hz inputs. They either use their 120Hz capabilities to do frame interpolation, or they take frame-packed HDMI 3D (60Hz, 2 images per frame) and spit it out as sequential 120Hz for their active shutter 3D system.

I can probably go out and buy a dual link dvi to hdmi cable and hook up the computer to the tv.

But before going through that hassle, how can i tell if my hdtv can take a 120hz signal.

Your TV cannot take a 120Hz signal. Furthermore a DL-DVI to HDMI adapter doesn't really exist; HDMI is equivalent to a single-link DVI connection.

True 120Hz TVs don't exist period.

Correct. Nvidia only lists some Mitsubishis that are compatible with 3D vision and native 120Hz input is a must for it.

Let's hope that the coming of the new consoles will force the industry to finally bring out some native input 1080P 120Hz along with 60Hz per eye 3D.

All we need is a chip capable to receive 300Mhz hdmi signals and that chip exists for a long time now.

It will be two years coming May. WTF are they waiting for? The second coming? Jesus!

Not 100% true. You've been Blur Busted.

Check out the HDTV Refresh Rate Overclocking Guide

Some HDTV's (especially active 3D models) are able to accept a 120 Hz native PC input in an undocumented manner. Blur Busters Blog got several confirmations.

This is because many are compatible with 3D at 60Hz/60Hz per eye, but there's a frame-sequential trick that puts 2D 120Hz frames in each of those. Same refresh rate, same dot clock, same signal. Just 2D 120Hz instead of 3D 60Hz.
