Edit - actually, seriously, maybe he's not an idiot. It's hard to resist that way of looking at it, but, as with Dubya (who also didn't appear the sharpest tool in the box) appearances can be deceptive, and dumbness might be another kind of smart. Don't you just have to judge such things by results in the end? None of Reagan, Dubya or Trump come over as intellectuals, but they all were capable of beating supposedly-clever Democrats when it came to it.

It is so tempting though. And it seems obvious that if any of those three had not been white their lack of orthodox articulacy (in Reagan's case more apparent towards the end) would have been interpreted very differently by Republican voters. I have mixed feelings about it.
