we would be much better off funding some real sex ed programs that teach about birth control, condoms, etc. Let's face it, kids will be kids and they are going to have sex no matter what you or I say.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Members of the House of Representatives on Friday voted to approve a request by President Bush to fund abstinence education at record levels. The move drew complaints from abortion advocates who say the sex education method is unproven and ineffective.

😕 Would have thought the pro abortion group would support the bill. After all it will increase the abortion rate!

Abstinence is the current buzz word, sounds nice but only increases the problem when an under-eductaed couple decide to couple. Education in all ways of preventing unwanted pregancies and STD's from occurring should be done by the parents and reinforced by the schools and peers.

Illinois Abortions Drop to Lowest Point in 30 Years, Some Credit Abstinence

Springfield, IL (LifeNews.com) -- New statistics in the state of Illinois show a whopping 10 percent drop in the number of abortions performed last year. The new numbers take the state to its lowest number of annual abortions in thirty years.

According to the Illinois Public Health Department, 42,228 abortions were performed in the Midwestern state last year compared with 46,945 in 2002.

"I have no way to explain the drop," said Tom Schafer, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Public Health told the Illinois Leader. Schafer said the drop was not due to incomplete reporting of abortion numbers.

Libby Gray, director of the Illinois-based Project Reality, an abstinence organization, credited abstinence education with helping to lower the abortion numbers.

"Since 1985, the State saw the teen birthrate drop to a 20-year low in 2000," Gray told the Leader. "Then Gov. Ryan and public health officials credited abstinence training in the state as contributing to that decline. So it's wonderful to hear abortions are also at a record low, meaning that if abortion rates have dropped and birthrates have dropped, something is changing in behavior."

Most abortions in Illinois occur in Chicago's Cook County, which saw an 11 percent drop from 2002 levels. Gray said 29 abstinence education groups work in Illinois and many in Cook County.

In 1973, 32,760 abortions were performed in Illinois, and the number has never been that low since. The highest number of Illinois abortions occurred in 1977, with 71,326 performed.

The new report shows that fewer college students and college-aged women in Illinois are having abortions. Half of last year's abortions involved women in their 20s and the group had the biggest decline in the number of abortions obtained.

According to the report, 38,700 abortions were performed on in-state residents and 3,497 performed on women living in surrounding states. Both numbers dropped significantly from their 2002 levels.

Most women who obtained abortions in Illinois, as in most states, were unmarried.

If the threat of death from AIDs and sickness from other STDs haven't curtailed promiscuity among our youth no amount of funding to promote Abstinence is going to make much of a difference either. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try but I doubt it will be very effectual considering the other influences on todays youth

what do you know? red dawn disagrees with this bill. what a shock.

And you agree with this bill? Is that because your girlfriend is prude, or just nasty?

 were you serious Jpeyton? to think i once respected you....

Well which one is it? I mean you've added so much to this thread with your original post, I'm just wondering what the reasoning behind it was.

i fail to see the spot where you yourself added anything to this thread. and for the record, my girlfriend is neither of the 2, which im sure your girlfriend is nasty.

If she's neither, then you must agree that abstinence isn't always the best policy?

i think it is the best policy if you want to refrain from pregnancy, however it is not always the best policy for everyone. what you do with your girlfriend is your own business... should i throw in a comment to here..hmmm, is your girlfriend prude or nasty?

I disagree with abstinence education, so that should give you an idea.

so is she just nasty then?
Nice to see that when one person has nothing to add to a thread another can come along and subtract.

Suprise!

Neither Planned Parenthood of Springfield nor Planned Parenthood of Chicago have released any statements concerning the significant decline in abortions.
