I think Mad Men is likely the best drama ever broadcast (I admit I have not seen enough of the Wire to intelligently compare them, but I have seen the other contenders), so I have no problem with it winning again and again. It seems absurd to me that Hamm has been left hanging all these years though.

He was awesome, a complete surprise, but come on Slattery was in God Mode this season, just watch the Chrysanthemum and the Sword episode, he dominates the screen.

I have not seen Mad Men (I'm assuming you are speaking of a Mad Men character), but I find it hard to believe anyone brought more to a series through a supporting role than Dinklage did in Game of Thrones.

I'd say The Wire is a bit better, but I'd also say The Wire is without a doubt the best TV series ever made

John Noble is pretty amazing on Fringe. Probably the best actor on TV with all the different roles he needs to play in that show. He wasn't even nominated though.

I own the first three seasons on Blu-ray but I have yet to watch a single episode. One of these days I'll get around to it.

Why would you keep buying it if you haven't seen an episode and thus have no idea if you'll like it or not?

I watched the first episode on Netflix (not sure if it's on streaming or disc only) and wasn't impressed at all. I'd be pissed if I had spent a bunch of cash on multiple seasons only to not like it.

LOL @ God Mode 🙂

I still think Hamm has a better acting range though. I mean, just look at his panic attack when he thinks that the "G-Men" are coming after him in his apartment hallway. Slattery is almost too confortable with the laid back, do nothing, crack a one-liner, and leave the room angle.

**Side Note** Did you know that Slattery's ex-wife on Mad Men is his actual wife in real life? And she used to be married to George Clooney 😱

For $7.50/season I could not resist a blind buy. Besides it really does sound like something I would like, just have not had the time to watch it yet. So far behind in TV series. 🙁

I rather enjoyed the first 3 seasons but the 4th just seemed sloppy and rushed and mostly uninteresting. It had great moments but not nearly as many as previous seasons. I hope they can pull off another good season of this.

Since you have notable good taste, you'll like it. It's a show for grownups, with pristine attention to detail and no car chases or laugh tracks.

I'm going to give Mad Men another chance and if I still don't like it I'm going to go on a rampage...I watched the first couple episodes and didn't think it was worth the time. My girlfriend did the same when it got to Netflix; She watched even more than I did, and came to the same conclusion.

One more chance Mad Men, that's all you get! For now, you are still just another overrated AMC show

Like Breaking Bad! 😛

Part of Mad Men's allure is its nuanced and accurate depiction of a different time and place in America -- near enough chronologically that many don't fully realize just how different "America" was then.

It's a minor sociological history lesson for some, and artfully done.

But then you add in the host of strong, truly well developed characters played by a first rate cast, and it's time to loosen your impossibly skinny tie, put your well polished florsheims up on your fifties-modern office furniture, and have a smoke and a highball while your "girl" types up your reports.

Mad Men is the first drama I've come across that I can unbiased say gets better every season. Season 1 is a lot of fluff and gets boring in spots because it focuses on Don/Betty and introducing the characters and nothing really happens until Draper's brother seeks him out, then things pick up a little as it gets into the Kennedy vs. Nixon election, but still they don't go into much of the creative process until later on and choose to focus on the attitudes of the characters and how they interact.

By the beginning of Season 2 though things get interesting. Jimmy Barrett adds some comedy/intrigue early on, Peggy starts settling into doing copyright, and before you know it you start picking out your favorite characters and hang on their every word. That's what makes the show great, the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts because the parts come together so well and there are so many of them. It's hard to imagine watching people just do what I would consider a boring job some 50 years ago would seem interesting, but I put off getting into the series until the end of Season 4 and now I'm through it 2 full times already, so there's definitely something to it I can't put my finger on but it works.

Then when you get to The Suitcase episode in Season 4 it's like shooting your wad twice and feeling like you can go another 2 times after what happens between Don and Peggy. I can't imagine having to wait another week for the next episode after that. Jon Hamm submitted that episode to the Emmy voters too, and while I've never seen any of Friday Night Lights it's just hard to imagine anybody topping that.

What?

Hmm. The commentary and the video clips in this thread make me want to check it out...

yeah, I think it's just below the Wire.

I'd put Deadwood up there, too, had it another season or two. 🙁
