Ok, a friend of the family has ran into trouble with their PC and somehow I got saddled with fixing it (friend of my father's actually. He knows I refuse any computer work but he told me this guy just "needs his new computer hooked up". I get over there and it's a used computer they bought form someone else, that's already hooked up, it just won't stay on the internet. Grrr . . . ).
So I've got this thing home with me now. Couldn't fix it there. I've managed to keep it connected for a while on my home network, and have patched the machine to the newest everything from Windows Update (it's Windows XP Home). I downloaded Avast! and AVG. Both found a few trojans, and a dialer called Delsim which is what I suspect caused all this. I've removed all of the nasties, but the machine still won't stay connected. I've reset the TCP/IP settings. Tried doing static DNS server instead of auto-detect. I've tried different network cards, etc. Won't stay connected for more than a few minutes. If I connect using a modem it barely stays connected for more than a few seconds.
Now, if they had the restore disk this puppy would have been wiped clean long ago. Unfortunately they didn't get it with the computer. So I'm trying desperately to salvage this install. Any ideas on the issue here?
Thanks.
