I posted a thread last week saying that I wanted to change my graphics card because it was giving me hell in vista.
here's a picture of "hell":

I thought the problem was with my graphics card (7900gt). When I first installed windows vista it didn't work properly. I'd get a screen covered with squiggly lines. After some searching I learned that some have solved this problem by overclocking. So I overclocked my card (barely) and it worked. I'd just get a bunch of red dots on the screen when it tured black before loading a game or etc. the problem kept on getting worst. It has started looking like the above picture since last week.

I opened my case today and played around a little. I had 2gigs of kingston DDR2-800 (2x1GB). I also have two sticks of 512MB DDR2-667 kingston which was not installed (I tried using all four sticks when I had XP and windows wouldn't start). anyway I try different combinations with these four sticks (cista comes up with all four installed). It turns out that when I have only 1GB (either with one or two sticks), I will get a minimum amount of "hell"! I mean I only get those red dots I mentioned and sometimes some flickers of "hell", but games are playable.

I'm obviosly not an expert. and right now I have no idea what the problem is..
my ram? my mobo? gfx card?
how can I find out?

I would try a different graphics card first. Slightly oc'ing your card does not mean its now ok.

I'd say either re-install xp and see what you get, but my guess is that the GPU is on it's way out the door. If you have a buddy that can loan you their GPU to verify our/your concerns than I'd do that.

Sadly most my friends are not gamers and don't have pci-e cards:(
I'll look around though.. maybe I'll try xp.
can anyone exlpane why changing the ram affects it?

Maybe there is less power drain with fewer RAM sticks, so your seeing that. Not sure, but maybe this is the case. If you have another PSU around maybe you can try that. The other things is to run on 1 stick of RAM (hopefully just the 1 gb stick) and remove all of the other un-necessary parts and see what you get.

Well I guess I was just lucky to able to run games without much difficulty that one time. It's buggy as hell right now with the same RAM..
I guess I'll just have to find a gfx card to borrow..
