confusing optical drive problem, HELP!

QueBert

Lifer
working on a PC for somebody, older HP (athlon 800) his dvd drive came up in windows as a cd drive, if I tried to put a dvd in it wouldn't see it. he upgraded to a new MB+CPU. Kept the same optical drives. When it POST's, it detects a Samsung DVD drive, I verified that also in the bios, but when XP starts up, it's showing it as a CD drive still. Any ideas why this is freaking happening?

thanks

have you tried checking drivers? look for the DVD drive's driver disc and try reinstalling that.

drivers? only drivers optical drives have are dos level, I've never had to install any drivers to get a optical to run under windows. Hummm maybe I'll just give up 🙂

Maybe because HP and Compaq Cdrom drives are garbage quality. I can't tell you how many i've replaced over the years.
