Weird thing happened yesterday. Friend's computer running windows 7 x64 with Office 2010. Everything was running fine but whenever he opened Word, a previous document he had, probably corrupt as he tried to cut it out of a larger document, would open.

None of the "ribbons" at the top would display, like the "home", View" Insert" etc.

I removed it from the recent list and tried to delete it from his Document folder, which it appeared to do, but still it would pop up.

I tried saving it as a Wordpad which worked though the formatting was messed up. But the main problem is, when I changed it to Wordpad, it also affected every other program. For instance, opening Quickbooks will display the messed up pad doc.

Also, every Icon changed to the "missing icon" look if you know what I mean. Even opening Firefox opens the doc.

I never came across this before. Checking the target attributes of the shortcuts show not ".exe" but something like "inf", I gotta get it back up to double check.

The default Programs all seem proper.

I figure this is a windows problem so posted here but if it belongs elsewhere, please move.

Many thanks for any input!

In Word that might happen if the corrupted file ended up save as a Template (extension .dot, .dotx).

Get rid of the bad template and create a new one.

I have No good explanation to what ever happened to other Apps. Their start-up files are of a different formats than Word.

It might be that the issue was created with some Malware infestation so the computer has to be thoroughly checked.

If you are not experiencing the template issue:

With Word closed, go to folder options and select "show hidden files, folder, and drives." If you see a word file with a similar name, but for a few character deviations, and less than other files, go ahead and delete it, then see if you can open Word without that problem.

As for your other programs, you may need to go to default programs and make sure things are set correctly.

Time to run a sfc /scannow

This and This. Thanks you so much! I'm running a boot scan now but I think I'm good.

You saved me from a lot of hassle, thanks!
