Confused OC frequency

Upgraded my ram today from 2GB Corsair to 4GB Mushkin, and for some reason it's unlocked a whole new world of overclocking headroom - originally I couldn't get my E5200 past about 3.3GHz (266FSB) without it failing to POST. I'm now stable at 3.6GHz (300x12)

A whole bunch of programs are confused about what frequency my CPU is running at though. CPUZ agrees with the bios setting of 3600. Everything else seems to think I'm running at 3750 (12.5x300. 12.5 is the stock multiplier for the chip so maybe that's it??)

Sisoft Sandra, Memtest 86, 3DMark06, and Windows XP itself, seem to believe I'm running at 3750. I take it CPUZ is always right?

Yes, CPU-Z is correct. Windows often thinks that you are running at teh default multi. I can't say about Sandra or others, I don't know.

Good job on the overclock though.

I've no idea why suddenly I can overclock since getting new ram - when I tried before I had the dividers set so that the ram was running below its normal speed. Still, won't grumble. £60 CPU on £40 motherboard @ 3.6GHz = win

hey i have done some research over here
what i think(i didnt read any tutorials or guides) is that
when u turn on the turbo mode in your bios
u actually get another 0.5 multipliers(sentence open for reconsideration)
so in this process u might have accidentally turned on the turbo mode
and mind you only few of the windows programs see the extra mutlipiers
and my research says that cpuz cannot

but anyways great overclock

BIOS can't make a CPU with locked multiplier go up....it's not possible. Windows and other apps that read your clock the same as XP think your CPU is at it's native multiplier of 12.5, hence the two different numbers.

Edit: CPU-Z is always correct for clock frequencies.

it happens like that here on my e8400 so iam forced to conclude so .......

Can you post a CPU-Z screenshot?

well cpuz doesnt
thats the whole point
i feel that this must be some hidden feature(a useless one)
i have only seen it in the bios post screen
i got 9.5 multipliers

Some newer chips support 0.5 multiplier increments.

Bus/Core Ratio: 12.5
Your stock multiplier is 12.5, many programs read the default multiplier and use the FSB to calculate speed.

well my theory was right so to some extent
well i atleast assumed that turning on the turbo mode gives me a extra multiplier which is not read by every software
