Confused - NF7S-2.0 with Socket A Sempron or Athlon XP?

I've got an NF7-S v2.0 mobo which is limping on an Athlon 900MHz >>> it is in a dire need of an upgrade.

I'm already running PC2700 DDR on the mobo because I had planned to upgrade to an an Athlon XP but with the availability of Athlon XP processors starting to diminish and the Socket A Semprons coming in to the market, I just don't know what to get anymore.

Should I get new / used?
Not planning to OC but will consider it, want best bang for the buck, looking to spend ~ $100 for processor + HSF. There are just too many variants of the XP as well as XP-M online.

Again, memory is already PC2700 DDR, so 333MHz FSB is the highest I can go for the CPU.

Suggestions please

Get a AMD 2500+ XP-M ... Best bang for the buck and overclocks great with a good heatsink. Definitely in your price range

If you want an XP, you're coming to the table late. The supply is limited, and the prices are going back up. The XP-M 2500's that were $80 last summer are about $100 now. The last SocKet A's of any kind were Semprons, in June and July of 2005. The XP's had already been shut down in May of 2005. When comparing Semprons to XP's, make sure you are dealing with Socket A -- there's been an overlap of Semprons between 2500 and 2700 that are Socket 754.

A Sempron Socket A 2400 is roughly equal to an XP 2200. A difference of about 200 performance points.

I have a Sempron 2400 socket A that bumps to 200fsb no sweat on standard voltage and the stock HSF. I bought it cheap. They're not too bad. Your mobo can definetely do 200mhz. fsb, perhaps your ram can too. Anyhow, you'd probably do best to buy whatever you can find used for like $50.

EDIT: You could also sell the mobo for maybe $35 then get a Sempron 2800 and a cheap Socket 754 board for about $130.

i don't think there's xp-ms left in stock anywhere, the only thing left is the desktop xp. so if ya want an xp-m you probably will have to go used.

edit: i'd up your budget a bit and go S754. All you need is a motherboard, processor, and HSF. A S754 2800 sempron costs 70 bucks and the 754 mobo should go for like 60.

Oiii, tempting to move up to a socket 754. I know the Sempron 754 will run circles around Socket A's

Ugh, poor NF7-S 2.0, I've got a dead one and an unused XP-M 2400+ ... although I'm assuming its the motherboard, had troubles with it detecting all my ram - assuming dead slots - and attempts to fix things only worsened the problems (including garbled video display) and a BIOS flash later I can't get it to POST, CMOS clearing and all. Even if I could replace the BIOS chip I don't know if all the RAM slots are functional...then again the CPU could be dead for all I know, haven't had a chance to go home to test it out.

T'was a great motherboard, its almost a shame to hear that you've only had a 900MHz Athlon in it all this time.

You don't have to worry about the RAM, especially if you're not overclocking (well not by much I guess), because I only remember the 3200+ as having a 200MHz FSB (400 DDR)

If I can find out my chip works I could buy your motherboard off ya if you're willing to go the s754 route - or vice versa, where I sell you my 2400+ - it will easily do 2.2GHz, although I didn't have much luck with it past 2.3GHz (although I definately don't want to sell you a dead CPU). But it will be a few days before I can confirm anything.
