Confused about Santa Cruz 6th Speaker Setting / Setup

Hey,

I just got my TB Santa Cruz today, and I was thinking about setting up the 6th Center/Sub channel, however in the manual to set this up, I need to connect the centre channel to "Tip" and the Woofer to "Ring"

What does that mean? and how would I go about setting it up?

How do I setup 6 speakers using the Versa Jack

You need a stereo 1/8 mini jack with 2 striped end wires. Radio Shack has them. The tip of the mini jack is the "tip" and represents the connection to one of the wire ends for the center channel. On the male plug below the ring is the "ring" and this represents the sub and transmits to the other bare wire.

In short, you need something with a mini plug on one end (like a walkman headphone ending) with a wire leading to 2 split ends. It is important that you get a stereo and not mono.

Hrmm.. alrite I get it.. what if I just conncect a direct 1/8" from the Versa to a Centre Speaker? What would happen?

Yes, that's all you need to do. Plug in the 1/8" miniplug into the VersaJack and "configure" the VersaJack accordingly.

Well, you could get a powered speaker and just plug it in the VersaJack. However, if you are seriously considering making your own "5.1" speaker solution, you should realize that voice-matched speakers goes a long way. For example, if you have a set of Logitech Z-560 and then add in Wal-Mart brand 0.0005W powered speakers as the center speaker channel, things won't sound that great... but in this set up, you'll only have that 1 subwoofer.

Another example would be getting a set of Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 and then throwing in a set of ProMedia 2.1 ... turn the subwoofer level on the ProMedia 2.1 to 0 and you'll effectively be cancelling out the second subwoofer.
 
Actually I do have a set of Logitech Z-560s and I wanted to add it a decent quality centre speaker, but I don't have another woofer for this use, so would it still be a viable option?

I may be wrong here, but I think if you use my solution above and just hook up the center channel and then just tape off the other wire coming from the stereo jack you would effectively be separating the center from the sub and since the sub isn't there, it is eliminated.
 
Yes, like I said, if you add a powered speaker to your set up and connect it to the VersaJack, you'll be in business. However, as stated before, if you do this, you're going to have weird balance issues in sound because your 5 speakers won't be voice-matched.

You could get yourself another set of Z-560s...
 


I have just successfully set up 2 sets of Logitech Z-560 into 1 working set. I did this by using the GTXP though
Sorry to say, I'm not familiar with TBSC sound card so I cant help you much. However, you will need some mod from Radio Shack, I'm pretty sure
