Confused about memory speeds!

I'm looking for a new motherboard to put in a system, however in my searches i've gotten a bit confused on what memory will work in what motherboard. Most motherboards, with the exception of the latest EVGA boards which say DDR2 1200, say they will only support up to DDR2 800, yet there are a large selection of memory chips available now at much higher speeds.

I've had people tell me that the memory will work up to whatever the FSB in your system is. And i have not been able to find a confirmation of this, or any information on exactly what will work, anywhere.

My question is, will memory such as DDR21066 work in a DDR2800 board, such as the latest ASUS models, does it require overclocking, or is my only option the new EVGA boards? Please help, thank you.

Boards listing DDR2-800 as the max supported speed will go higher, but it does require that you overclock the FSB. If you don't want to overclock the CPU you would have to lower the CPU multi to run the CPU at stock speeds or less.

Really unless you plan on overclocking the lower end Intel CPU's (lower CPU multi), then highspeed ram is totally unecessary and a waste IMO. High ramspeed doesn't give but a very small performance boast in the vast majority of real world applications. And if you have an AMD chip or the higher end Intel chips you don't need highspeed ram to acheive a good overclock.

And you won't find any official confirmation from mobo makers, Intel or AMD because they don't officially support or guarantee overclocking results even though they obviously make parts geared towards overclockers
