Confused about digital cameras. HELP!

I've been out looking for a new digital camera today to replace my current one (*It decided to go to camera heaven*) since it's DOA now. Problem is, I'm seriously confused with the newer cameras. There's so many choices, so many different cameras and so many different options, different memory card types, and so on. Basically it's a big freaking mess.

I'm looking for a new digital camera, under $300 if possible, with at least 2 megapixels of resolution. That's the first of the requirements I'd like to have. I'm also looking for one that uses a standard compact flash card for memory (not the proprietary cards), uses either a 9v or AA batteries for power, and is of respectible reputation and quality. AKA, I don't want it dying in 6 months. Can anyone give me any good suggestions for cameras and models to look into? I'll do the rest of the research from there, but I am needing suggestions as to what cameras I should look into. Thanks for the help.

yea, where is rossman? this thread had been around for 15 min and he hasn't popped in w/ his usual post about his camera. i mean, hell he must have the ctrl-v permanently ready for this type of post!🙂

The 2.1 MP Canon A40 is $249.99 just about everywhere, it uses CF, and is the BEST damn camera in its price range. 'Nuff said!

He would also add "You might want to wait for the next sale to get a free 64mb CF and apply the 50 off 200 coupon for even greater savings"

He would also add "If you absolutely CAN'T wait...then get it at Best Buy this weekend with a 10% Preferred Customer coupon. Maybe play hard to get and the salersperson might throw in some freebies to close the sale."

i found the thread on f@twallet.. and i checked staples.. i don't think they carry the s30 anymore.. but maybe you could use that $50 coupon on another camera.. maybe a s200 or 230?

c'mon, let's not let this thread die

by the way, 2 stackable coupons for 70 off 300 total.. you gotta go find those on your own, but there's a thread on getting the s330 at staples.. you gotta find that on your own too, cause i'm just way too lazy

He doesn't even know how to use the A40 yet. LOL!

For £300 I bought a 4mp camera of much better quality and shooting time then the A40, granted the camera was on a sale😀

Its usual for £ to be converted to $ and get the same things even though the £ is worth more $. I wonder why this hasn't happened with the digital camera?

I have the Minolta F100.

Any brand that you've heard of will last more then 6 months easily.

Personally, I'm looking at the Canon S200.. you can find it for about $250 during warm deals.

Canon A40 is much to big for my likings as I want something I can carry around easily in my pocket.

Here are 5 good digicams to consider however the Fuji Finepix 2600 uses SM and 2650 uses xD media. Both are very highly rated and if you can find it, you should be able to score the Fuji Finepix 2600 for around $150 or even less.

Of course my favorite is still the Canon PowerShot A40 because:

This is the BEST DAMN 2 megapixel digicam in it's class and these reviews practically speak for themselves:

I got an Olympus C720 ultra zoom for $300 shipped from returnbuy. I bid on returnbuy's item from eBay. It's flawless. The camera is 3.0 MP with 8x Optical zoom. Blows all other cameras away from the price range.

Camera at returnbuy.

Please note that the camera is NOT brand new. Returnbuy resells returns or something like that. My camera is basically new.

I debated between the S200 and the A4 for a while, and picked the S200 for just that reason. It is in transit and will get it this week. 😀

I have a Canon S30 and bought an A40 for the GF's mother.

Overall I'm happy with them, with one exception: Both have trouble focusing in low light situations. It's a bit annoying to have to turn on all the lights to take a good picture. It kills the mood at parties.

HA! I just got the A40 with a free 64meg CF card.
I didnt get the $50 off but i did get a free $25 giftcard (had to wait a week for them to get it in). so i purchased some photopaper and odds and ends.

Great camera with a bunch of options. now i need to pick up a ac adapter and a case. oh and a battery charger.

Ok, this is a stupid question, but what all comes in the box with your digital camera? I know you obviously don't get the docking station, but do you get the connectors, ac adapter and all that including batteries, or do you have to shell out extra to get that?
