I used to get it on a regular basis as a child, several times in a 2 or 3 year period. My mom never understood how I could just sit there and let them take a throat culture without gagging. SUr enough, now that I'm older, when I had a through culture taken, I couldn't stand it.

I've never had strep before, so I'm scared of this throat culture thing :(

No worries...they just swab it with an extra long Q-tip kinda thing....you will be okay! :)

They basically take a long cotton swab and swab the back of your throat -- no pinching, no cutting, no puncturing. All you have to be able to do is supress your gag reflex.

By the way, concentrating on supressing a reflex is a bad idea. You need to find a distraction of some sort.

Damn... strep and mono, that's rough.

Yeah.. who have you been kissing? Mono has a 6-7 week incubation period. Think back. ;)

That said, once you get mono.. that's it. You're (usually) never symptomatic again, but.. being a member of the Herpes family, you're infected for life.

Something like 98% of all people have the Epstein-Barr(mononucleosis) virus. Many people contract it when they're born, or very young... in which case, there are no symptoms. It's only when you get it as a teenager that it fscks you up. :frown:.

You'll feel better soon... hopefully. It can last as little as 2 weeks, or as long as 2 months. I'm sure the fact that you also have strep at the same time doesen't help anything. Your immune system must be really overloaded.

By the way, the white stuff in the back of your throat isn't puss.. it's scablike stuff... It will come off as your throat heals.. and it's really fscking nasty, lol..

You got the mono from your girlfriend; that is.. she was already infected when you met her. She will not get sick, at least not with mono.. she could get strep though.

Damn, I just found out I have mono today:(. I went in last week and had sinusitis. Got the antibiotics, my throat got worse, went back to the docs, and now have mono. This sucks!!!

My girlfriend is gonna kill me. Unless I got it from her, in which case, she is dead!:D

I feel your pain man. I had mono twice, the first time was weak, the second was AWFUL!! The second time around was just like your experience...flu first, white on tonsils, test positive for mono. I was in bed for a good two weeks with that one...all over Christmas break too!! :| I hope you feel better soon!

If you are able to still post here at Anandtech consider yourself lucky.

<Edit> I got my first ride in an ambulance because of mono. :) <Edit>

When I was in HS I got mono (with secondary tonsilitis and strep) so bad that I could not breath (throat was closed off) and was in the hospital for 5 days (my white count was through the roof). I was the confined to bed for 6 weeks (had to stay home from school, slept almost the entire time) and then still had to stay home for another 3 weeks after that. The school sent out a teacher to tutor me because I was missing so much school. And...this part sucks......I had also been working as a ski instructor and by the time I could go back to school there was one month of skiing left...I wasn't allowed to do JACK SQUAT!!:|

The docs were worried because my spleen was still swollen and didn't want it to rupture. So there went the ski season and couln't try out for any school sports that spring.

Was a bad time......oh yeah......I am one of those lucky individual that has gotten mono twice.....2 years later had to spend the summer DOING NOTHING but sitting on the beach.:(

It is not called the "kissing disease" for nothing...
