"The entire company has been sold to Microsoft," he said.

Microsoft has not announced the Rare purchase, and a company representative declined to comment on the deal. The acquisition has been the subject of numerous reports, estimating the buy at anywhere from $400 million to $540 million.

Because MS thinks they are going to win the console war by buying everyone out. Sure doesn't look like it though.

Schelley Olhava, an analyst for research firm IDC, said the type of family-friendly games Rare creates are exactly what Microsoft needs to broaden the appeal of the Xbox beyond hardcore gamers.

"They need to get into the mass market," she said. "Rare has a reputation for developing very solid, high-quality franchises, something that's been really lacking for the Xbox...Rare is very good at developing characters; they made Donkey Kong what it is today."

Too bad every one of those games was made using a nintendo character. Nice try, MS.

I wonder if this means the next perfect dark game will still be released for the GC? I know it was one of the games that might have gotten me to buy a GC

Not to flame or anything but I was the first to post this about a week ago. It was pretty much known that this was a done deal back then.

I'm not sure MS got Banjo-Kazooie, as they originated in Diddy Kong Racing.... wonder what the offical word is on all the properties.

Been a lot of news over the gaming boards. Basically what it went like was:

Nintendo had 49%

Had the option to buy Rare entirely, but didn't

Divested out of Rare entirely, but retained certain titles (from what I've seen, they have them all but Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Conker)

MS buys Rare in its entirety

Win win for both companies I suppose. Nintendo blames a lack of products from the team. Just weren't contributing. Supposedly Conker64 was a blow out type game where N let Rare do whatever they want. Aftward N told them what games they would be making. Some of the staff had already left (The folks who did Goldeneye had gone on to do Time Splitters). N didn't see a need to keep the company, they owned most of the franchises.

MSFT gets some big titles out of it. Perfect Dark X will be a big product I'm sure. There is speculation that the team is not super happy about being let go from N because all they knew was GC programming and will now have to learn something else.

Again just the news that's been on the gaming sites.

I'd be pissed too if all I knew was PC and my company bought all Macs:disgust:

Kameo and Perfect Dark are to be the first two releases for the Xbox. I don't think this news is as big as people are making it. If Nintendo thought Rare was important to the Gamecube, they would have exercised their option to buy Rare. They will find new developers for the Starfox, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong franchises and no one will know the difference. I did read that Rare will continue to develop for the Gameboy.

So what does it mean? They can't do Starfox or the Donkey Kong games. Basically the Xbox gets more FPS games (ED and Goldeneye). Xbox is really starving for FPS games

Call me if they decide to make Killer Instinct III or something.
