Well ladies and gentlemen this has been a mythical creature that many have sought after for the past few years. A way to unlock their Motorola devices bootloader. Many sites have started petitions, thousands of them, hate mail , twitter posts, Facebook posts to Moto just to name a few. What did everyone get for countless hours of persistence and dedication? Well nothing really just broken promises and still consumers continued to push on about the issue. Motorola's answer came with putting Developer Editions out after years of ridicule and unanswered questions. So did everyone go out and buy one? Nope, sure didn't; the moral debate still continues on this issue so it's better to just leave that for another time.

So as my buddy @P3Droid always says, "You're chasing a unicorn". Meaning don't get your hopes up. Many leads have been followed to no avail. So what can change? What mythical beast can take this challenge and give some end users the chance to unlock there phone to do as they see fit?

Well Dan Rosenberg @Djrbliss has taken the bull by the horns and has done the "impossible"! As far as I know, this is for the Attrix HD, DROID RAZR HD/HD Maxx and the DROID RAZR M. Dan reached out to @mattlgroff and I to test it on the Atrix HD and the DROID RAZR HD, respectivly.

I'm a little jaded, we've been down this route before and haven't really made and progress.

Yesterday, news broke that Dan Rosenberg (@djrbliss) had unlocked bootloaders for a handful of Motorola devices including the DROID RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD, RAZR M, and Atrix HD, all of which are powered by Qualcomm chipsets. Today, he has released that same unlock tool so that you can free your phone from Motorola and Verizon’s clutches.

We should point out that you cannot re-lock the phone after using this tool (at this point), and it does indeed void your warranty. Also, Motorola can more than likely patch this in a software update, so you may want to weigh your options here before long. It’s risky from a warranty and replacement standpoint to say the least. As always, proceed with caution.

You definitely need to be rooted ahead of time, prior to using this tool. For those with a RAZR HD running Android 4.1.2 (the newest update), root has not been gained yet so you are out of luck for now. I can’t imagine that this won’t ever be rooted, but again as of today, there is no root method.

As we mentioned yesterday, this method does not work on OMAP powered phones, including the original RAZR, Bionic, and DROID 4. Do not attempt to use this on any of those phones.

I'll be damned. Clever bastards finally did it.

They broke the Qualcomm phones which is an achievement, but yeah, the OMAP phones since the Milestone 1 in 2009 are still untouched. :(

I'd say the thread title is a bit misleading. I came in here thinking that Moto will now unlock bootloaders or they will provide unlocked phones. Not true. They'll likely patch it up and continue to work with Verizon to provide you the most locked down experience you can ever want. Maybe the Qualcomm phones are easier to crack, but Moto's probably gonna clamp down just like Apple would.

Personally, I'd rather have fully unlocked domestic GSM on "global" capable VZW Moto phones than an unlocked bootloader. That, imho, would be a much more important achievement, given Safestrap does just fine for the bulk of the user population.

Editted the thread title for more clarity for you. And I would agree with your statements, they'll probably OTA this exploit away before too long and fix it entirely in future models. But, by then, I won't be tied to Verizon like I am now. Contract ends at the end of the month.
