Anyone downloading the HL2 hack is taking sides with the Cracker, Hacker, Slacker, Wanker or whatever you want to call it. Second, do you really want to play a hacked version that may contain viruses, hacks or Trojans? By playing the hack it's the equivalent to kicking your grandmother in the head after she's fallen and then bragging about it. Are you that sad of a human?

Third, Valve is a private company they can do whatever PR they want. If lying and being hypocrites is a standard of doing PR at their company then it's their prerogative. We most likely don't even know what the real story is, I'm willing to give Valve the benefit of the doubt BUT Valve MUST come clean, why ? because the original HL fanbase are the ones who made them who they are today are we are ready to support them by not downloading the hacked version and bying it when it does come out. Whatever did happened their fanbase deserve better than this.

Has Valve learned a lesson - Oh yes.
Has the community learned a lesson - Oh yes.

There's also another angle or factor that could be at work here and it may be why Valve is keeping their mouth shut. The crak-er may be trying extortion, they may want valve to pay a ransom or they start releasing bits of old code and sutff and as time goes by they move on to more completed stuff like final maps, final codes or even on to Gold stuff like CZ or even a full Beta HL2 or Gold even. Eventually if valve doesn't pay up he may release the final Gold or beta's versions of the games. This is just a possiblity here, but after all being said, Valve at one point MUST come clean.

And that is why I refuse to download HL2 and am waiting until Christmas to buy it.

I've played it, it's definately pretty cool, but it doesnt really work yet.

you have to use the "~" consol to do everything (like load the levels)

it was an interesting "sneak peek", but it's not really playable. many of the textures(?) are wierd colors or not even there yet. so many colors are off.

you can "play" a few levels, but it will usually lock when you get to the load sequences, and there's not too many enimies.
the dune buggy is pretty cool though. reminds me alot of the warthog in halo.

it was cool to check it out, (and see the reflections), but it's already been deleted from the sytem it was on, because it's not playable.

i would recomend not wasting your time with it, but just wait for a playble version to be sold in stores.

after seeing this "demo" i'll definately buy the retail version

Edit: I just remembered how weird people have been about this "Leak" thing, so if this post is not allowed, Mods please delete my post, it is not my intention to do anything wrong (i dont see how it could be)

I really dont see how someone leaking the code could push their release date back... unless the took the only copy of it.

it really helps them (not with the release date) because of all the publicity. every geek and his dog are talking about this game now.

I honestly wouldnt be suprised if they leaked it on purpose to get some free advertising. and to give them an excuse to move the due date. (BTW, what is the current release date, I hear lots of things)

and here's an example of the most useless post of the day. Then again for those that do play the hack don't have much of a brain or soul to start with so the analogy really aint that far off and it aint worth the bandwidth to debate it.

it's probably because of the code itself.... by obtaining the code they may be in the know as to how to circumvent the anti-cheat or anti-piracy protections, a rewrite or at least a look at the possible ramifications would be in order.

I think that they are pushing it back so far because now their STEAM code and all their anti-piracy software is now publicly availible. That means that if there were somebody who knew what they were doing with raw source code could find out a lot of ways around that stuff, and make some hideous cheats that could ruin the multiplayer portion of the game.
260Mb of source code is a huge pile to work with

Also, the alpha proves that Valve scripted the E3 demo... not that it matters.

I have downloaded both the code and the 'alpha.' They prove nothing at all. Obviously this guy didn't get everything, as shown by the glaring 'ERROR' entities lying around all the maps. The scripted sequences are just a result of the AI not actually being in place because most of the people downloading the 'alpha' can't figure out how to activate it.

The code is ugly as hell, however.

First, Id coined the phrase "when it's done". Blizzard just sets release dates and then misses them for a year . Both companies are known for only releasing polished products.

Second, I doubt anyone is saying what the hacker did was good, moral, just or otherwise.

Third, the issue here is that Valve could have possibly been lying out their ass since E3. Which affects several issues.

- They psyched people up with a possibly scripted game sequence. This is worse than going to E3 with a CGI video because people will expect what your script presented them.
- They made nVidia look horrible, which they arguably are, but there was no reason to make such an issue and then a few weeks later push your game a year back.
- They blame their delays on leaks but then the leaks show that the game was never ready to begin with. There is no polished product. They lied.

Now, there is a good chance that this is an older build or something isn't right. But I'd like to say the truth is somewhere in the middle. The truth being, Valve probably has a later build that is more stable, but still isn't anywhere near completion and what was shown at E3 had some scripts but most of it was the game's AI. This still faults Valve with a lot of lying.

Oh well, I will enjoy it when it finally comes out... I just miss the days when developers had honest .plan files and would talk to the community... like an actual community. I remember when Id members used to make regular visits to IRC chat rooms just to talk to us. And then when Quake1 came out, they'd invite people playing on servers to come play on the id servers while answering questions about Quake2 . Fond memories.
