If you have a RESELLERS web hosting account with dathorn, thrillhost, crediblehost or hostforfree.

Where exactly on GoDaddy.com's site do you go to REGISTER NAME SERVERS, for instance if I wanted to register
ns1.rossman.net
ns2.rossman.net

Where on GoDaddy.com's site is that located?

Thanks,
Ross

2/17 Update: - I'm helping someone register their name servers with godaddy.com so they gave me their login details, I have no freakin' clue where to go. If it weren't for the helpful link provided in this thread I would go crazy.

I may not be understanding this completely, but if you already have rossman.net registered, why do you need to register the subdomains??

Well,

I just logged into my account, clicked on Manage Domains, clicked on conjur.com and in the bottom right is:

Nameservers Summary

NS1.CONJUR.COM
NS2.CONJUR.COM

Click here to see details or to modify.

For yagt.org it looks the same:

Nameservers Summary

NS1.CONJUR.COM
NS2.CONJUR.COM

Click here to see details or to modify.

:)

Or...use the Set Nameservers link and click the Custom Nameservers radio button and enter your own.

Nameservers

Apply changes to:

Single Domain (CONJUR.COM)
All Eligible Domains

Nameservers control how a domain name is resolved. If you are hosting with GoDaddy.com, just select Default Hosting Nameservers and we will fill in the values for you. Or, if you would like to use one of our Parked Pages until you build a site of your own, click Default Parked Nameservers.

If you will be using other nameservers, please select Custom Nameservers and enter them in the spaces provided.

Changes to nameservers may take up to 48 hours to take effect.

Default Hosting Nameservers
Default Parked Nameservers
Custom Nameservers <---- click this guy

Nameserver 1: NS1.CONJUR.COM
Nameserver 2: NS2.CONJUR.COM
Nameserver 3:

I believe he wants to register nameservers, not point his domain to one.

ahh, I see. I have no idea then. Can you do that with godaddy?

OMFG. Godaddy support agents are FVCKING STUPID. It took me 5 minutes to get the guy to understand that I'm having trouble registering my nameservers. I told him flat out "I'm having trouble registering my nameservers." Through my explaining to him and him telling me to go to the wrong pages time after time, he goes "OH, you want to REGISTER your name servers! Oh, well that's easy."

No, it's not. In order to initially register your reseller's name servers, you have to click on "manage domains", then actually CLICK the "<domain>.<whatever>" and then go to the bottom right and click the little plus "Domain Host Summary" then click details/modify. It is ONLY THERE that you can initially register ns1.<domain>.<whatever> and ns2<domain>.<whatever>. THEN you can go to "set nameservers" and use your personalized name servers that you want to use. Ugh. Never again. I'll use NameCheap.com from now on. :|

Trevelyan - This is a question regarding DOMAINS with GoDaddy.com (I use NameCheap.com which 10x better) not web hosting.

TommyVercetti - Thank you, that is correct. Although I put in CAPS AND BOLD people think it's about changing DNS name servers which it is not.

FFMCobalt - Please read conjur's post dated 02/11/2004 11:42 AM, find that CUSTOM NAME SERVERS button.

Ross... "custom name servers" is only for name servers that are already registered. See my post just above yours. Someone just above mine posted a link to the Godaddy FAQ (which I looked through but missed) that shows how it needs to be done.

I don't remember the order I did it but between my two posts in here, that should cover it. ;)

conjur among other AT'ers have already registered their own name servers, I wonder how/what they did differently.

Perhaps you already [accidentally] registered your own ns?

Try modifying one of your domains, changing the DNS name server to yours, see if it works (doubt it will but what they hey).

Doesn't Gregg use godaddy? He should know.

Ive always been suspicious of companies with names like "godaddy.com". Yep, theyll be here 10 years from now - not!

Back in the early 80s when I was a wee lad I used to have fun calling this national fly-by-night operation called "1-800-hot-rock". You could order 8tracks, albums or cassettes over the phone. Jokers didnt last 12 months.

I could be wrong however, but the point is, cheapest is not always the best. You get what you pay for.

At least godaddy.com is an ICANN-accredited registrar. So, *should* godaddy.com ever go under, your domain information is safe.

That is correct.

GoDaddy.com is an ICANN accredited registrar and NameCheap.com is not :(

You know it be great to put all this information in one sticky. Like:
who as the best rate for hosting? who has the best rate as a registrar? what to watch out for (like another company actually owning your domain)

also, which would come first? signing up for a host or for a domain name?

I want to build a site for my folks where they can use an email besides yahoo. and they can use the site for business and for family stuff.

That's funny you mention that because a few months ago I started a huge ass Domains and Web Hosting FAQ thread. But then I realized who would read it, care about it or would it even get noticed? So I stopped.

I will either resurrect that and post the thread or post something on Neffing.com regarding domain registration and web hosting. Since you can register a domain and have your own web site (with email) for $15/yr it's suddenly become affordable to the average AT'er. Especially considering most domain registrars and web hosts accept Paypal as payment.

Last week I helped a 16 year old AT'er register their domain, get web hosting it was around $17/yr and they paid for it via Paypal. I guess they didn't want to make their parents aware of their intentions of creating a web site.

When you are ready to start on your family/business web site, please feel free to contact me for assistance.
