Confirmed: AMD will delay BD launch again now to Oct. 2011

I do have a bulldozer ready board that currently houses an x6 cpu not sure if I'll move to bulldozer I guess it depends on how much faster it is

It explains Anand's comment on the frontpage yesterday about bulldozer info "not coming soon".

Just in case some of you go scampering to AT to find an article, this is what IDC is talking about:
from another thread here said:
From Anand's twitter conversation posted at AT sidebar:

Justin Clay said:
@anandshimpi oooh I'm excited! Also can't wait till you can talk about Bulldozer. Soonish maybe?

Anand said:
@justinclay not soonish on Bulldozer I'm afraid

I don't know what "soonish" means to either of them, but suffice it to say, BD reviews won't be arriving "soonish" according to Anand.

I suppose a delay to October is, in fact, not soonish at all.

So much for 'overclocking to 5ghz+' on BD. The BD quad at 125w uses about as much power as a SB at the same frequency, OC'd from only 3.3ghz stock!! This tells me the 6-cores and 8-cores will likely OC like crap.

This says the final version goes into production this month, does that mean we will not see these at all in serious quantities until 2012? I wonder if the initial models will be essentially 'paper launched' and the other SKUs will be available next year when the initial models are reaching resellers.

On the plus side, the model selection is better than the initial choices. Much better options in the lower and middle section. That's the ONLY plus I can get out of this whole announcement...

Continued:

12) January 2009 - AMD finally launches Phenom II X4 @ $234 and $275. Core i7 920 sells for $284. "The results of our tests show that the top Phenom II X4 processors can only be worthy rivals to the Core 2 Quad CPUs from the “junior” Q8000 series. Unfortunately, Phenom II X4 cannot yet do better than that.". So not only was Phenom II unable to compete with its direct competitor i7, but it wasn't even able to compete with Q9xxx series CPUs from 45nm C2Q generation.

13) February 2009 - Phenom II X4 Overclocking - can't beat overclocked Q6600 / Q9300 processors. Pretty underwhelming considering Intel's "current" generation at this time is now i7. This is really a sad state of affairs since Q6600 was a <$300 CPU in August of 2007....

14) March 2009 - The beginning of "New AMD Strategy" --> If we can't compete on price or performance, let's throw in more "free" cores at the same price. Suddenly, Phenom II X3/X4 finds itself competing with C2D and lower-end Q8xxx series from Intel. AMD is really struggling here.

15) August 2009 - AMD launches Phenom II X4 965. Performance can only match a Q9550 @ 2.83ghz. Phenom II X4 965 costs $245. I quote: " As we have seen during our tests, the new Phenom II X4 965 working at 3.4 GHz frequency is pretty much as fast as Core 2 Quad Q9550 at 2.83 GHz nominal speed and fall behind Core i7-920 with even lower nominal frequency of 2.66 GHz. So, AMD CPUs lose to Intel competitors quite significantly in IPC (instructions per clock)"

16) September 2009 - S1156 launches: The end of Phenom II X4's relevance for a vast majority of users: $199 Core i5 750. "This platform immediately turns Core 2 and Phenom II CPUs into outdated solutions that can only be of interest in the sub-$200 category."

I don't think I need to keep going. Basically outside of Free / $10 mobo + Phenom II X4 / X6 MicroCenter deals and AMD's only shining bright star: Athlon II X4 6xx series processors, the last 5 years saw complete Intel domination.

Ding dang . I missed the quote At post 57. I mite agree with that . So what thats not overclocking for daily use its a short run and means little to nothing

Ya the 2600k but the 2500K @4.5 consums about the same as the core your discussing. The 2500K will bloody it up pretty good.

You're serious? You think that an 8c BD wont o/c to 4.5ghz at least with 30$ AIR coolers and not be a 300$ darling chip with LN2 extreme overclockers at the same time?

Better a delay than a Fermi. Most propable the stars will align and we will see, Desktop BDs, Multithreaded Catalyst drivers, a new APP SDK and the new GCN 7900s a month or two later, making a complete platform.

Better a delay than a Fermi.

You sure? Fermi was 10-15% faster out of the gate after being 6 months late and GTX460 become one of the best price/performance cards. Fermi architecture proved to be extremely robust and forward looking too (GPGPU/Tessellation/awesome DX11 performance and superior 3D glasses support). With a quick refresh, GTX560/570/580 put NV in the driver's seat again.

If BD is anything like Fermi (i.e., more power consumption -- 125W instead of 95W to begin with), but has 15% more performance and has a more advanced CPU architecture than SB, that would be stellar!

More bad news for AMD?

"If assumptions and unofficial bits of information about Komodo and Corona are correct, then it is clear that Vishera CPUs and Volan/Scorpius Refresh are considerably less progressive than previously planned products. Apparently, AMD will not have high-end desktop platforms with PCI Express 3.0 support in 2012"

Is it okay to assume that since they are canning Bulldozer successors - the reason for it is that the original didn't come up to specs as well?

Seems logical to me.

It seems like a jump, particularly if they're only canceling this product and not Trinity too. Plus they don't have a backup plan - it's BD or nothing.

Am I stupid for considering the 4.2 ghz was a typo or scrivener's error? It would probably blow out the higher end 8 core chips at that speed.
