Configuring 8600GT

Hi all - hoping for some advice...

I have a Dell Dimension 9100. I had a GeForce 6800 in it, which looked great both for Windows and games. But the fan got *way* too loud, so I just upgraded to a Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT, which is fanless.

I installed the latest drivers, but I'm not happy with the way my screen looks. The text in the windows title bars looks unclear, and I'm sure I'm not getting as much detail in the scenery in Zoo Tycoon II as I did with the old card (though the Bengal tigers look great!).

I'm hoping I've just got something configured wrong... Still running DirectX 9.0c, fwiw... I'd be surprised if that was the problem, but then again what do I know. That's why I'm here asking all the experts!

I dont know about Nvidia drivers but if they are like ATI's you can adjust the moniters properties (color output etc...)

Sounds like the resolution is set wrong. Set it to the native resolution if you have a TFT.

i woulda just stuck with the 6800 and added some after-market cooling. but it definitely sounds like a resolution problem. if the text still doesn't look good, download the cleartype powertoy from MS. it has a wizard that lets you set the appearance for text on an lcd. as for the details- when you upgraded the drivers and the nvidia software suite it probably defaulted the aa and af settings. if your not playing very demanding games, I'd hike them up all the way. if it slows down the frames too much, i'd suggest pulling back on the eye-candy a bit, or simply downloading ntune, or rivatuner, and overclocking it to keep the high settings, and the frames. this may add some heat, but sometimes even small clock increases (or memory adjustments) will allow for an even-medium of everything- heat, settings, and frames
