If you really wanted to save, you could use the Cyrix III that comes integrated with the motherboard. It would not perform nearly as well as the Sempron, though.

With the extra $40 you can get an extra 256MB ;)

Only 256MB RAM? Gonna be thin wit XP runnin. And I'm w/ hugobomber...get the onboard video and spring for another 256...the onboard video I believe only steals up to 32MB...even if it was double that, you would still come out ahead. (BTW - mouse? Keyboard? monitor?)

Go with a cheapo raidmax case and get the decent psu that someone recommended. I don't recommend onboard video. It just doesn't feel right to me.

why not just get the latest "deal" on a Dell 400sc..

about $347 last time i checked.

(no operating system, but hey, your time has to be worth something, not to mention you have a warranty)

It shouldn't take more than 2hrs-3hrs tops to slap it together and get everything installed with a pre-made slipstreamed disc for most DIYers. That would be a far more constructive use of time than surfing the net, TV, or gaming for that free time period, just a different perspective for you :) There's a 1yr warranty for most the parts, and the CPU he selected has a three year. The Dell is a nice system, but this is a DIY/hardware enthusiast site first and foremost, with the P&N being an afterthought ;) BTW, after tax, which Dell charges in my state, I could build a overclocked Barton-M system with Soundstorm that would spank it for the same money :) Also, does that Dell hotdeal system even provide an AGP slot? If not it's completely useless to most here, whereas Sneaky's config is a capable budget gamer and comes with a copy of XP. I would opt for the Shuttle AN35NU over Asus though, and the system gets overclocked since that's SOP 'round here :D

If you are going to upgrade the PSU (good idea), you might as well buy an Antec case wit that PSU already installed. It'll save you a little. You'll have $90 in the case and PSU as it stands, you can get an Antec SLK-2650BQE (if you want black) or the SLK3700AMB (metallic bronze) for $65 at Newegg. Both already have the SL350 PSU.

The odd $25 could be put towards the 512MB upgrade.

Go to accurateit.com for really cheap refurbished computers. You can get a P3 600/128MB/20GB system for $110 + shipping. Add some RAM and anybody using it for just internet access/word would never be able to tell the difference between it and a 3.0GHz P4.

Edit:
Oh yeah, I don't work for them of course. I bought a system from them recently (p3 733) to try out fedora and it works great.
