Configuration Advice Please

Here is the situation:

Have several PC?s located in adjacent offices, call them the ?stand-alone? PCs. They all are connected to the LAN but have no modem/phone lines available. I have their HDs mapped to my PC

My PC is running the RC5 client; receiving and transmitting to the proxy via a JUNO connection A-OK.

I absolutely cannot (don?t want to) utilize our Co?s T1/Proxy Server to send/receive RC5 data. ? Using the free inet connection is OK
though.

I want to run the RC5 client on the "stand-alone" PCs

How do I set up the stand-alone PCs (that do not have modems but are on the LAN and shared to me) to crack blocks. ? I guess what I need clarification on is: How do I get data to and from these PCs over the LAN. How do I get the results back up the line?

Since I don?t want to be constantly fiddling with the ?stand-alone? PC?s I also need to know the best approach in parceling out the work to them ? I don?t want the client software to run out of work!

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

You could run a pproxy on your box... setup the stand alone PCs to connect to it just like it's a DNet server... only enable the "proxy is on secure LAN..." option... to insure no fallback to DNet...

That's what I would do, or if you don't wanna do that you could share buffers with your PC... This requires that the stand alones are able to access you too, not only that you can access them!

Are you concerned about bandwidth? Just curious...
A single mouse click on your browser generates more traffic than all those machines combined sending dnet packets all day long. Just a thought. If it's for other reasons, obviously my answer is not appropriate. 🙂
 
You can set the other PC's to share your main buffers via the Remote Buffers function.

Go here (#2 from client main menu):

distributed.net client configuration: Buffer and Buffer Update Options

1) Buffer in memory only? (no disk I/O) ==> yes
2) Disable buffer updates from/to a keyserver ==> yes <-- set to yes
3) Keyserver<->client connectivity options
4) Disable buffer updates from/to remote buffers ==> no <-- set to no
5) Remote buffer directory ==> //Mainpc/distributed/ <-- set to remote shared RC5 dir.
6) Load-work precedence ==> RC5,DES=0,CSC=0,OGR=0
7) Additional buffer-level checking ==> 2
8) Buffer-level check interval ==> 0:10
9) Preferred packet size (2^X keys/packet) ==> RC5=33
10) Fetch work threshold ==> RC5=0,OGR=0
11) Fetch time threshold (in hours) ==> RC5=0

0) Return to main menu

The shared RC5 directory is the distributed.net directory of the computer using the Juno connection...

Dan's suggestion sounds like the most suitable. What OS is on the connected machine? This page has several versions of pproxy software, toward the bottom under Personal Proxy Statistics Generators.

Once it's setup on the main machine, it's a very simple matter to configure your cows to connect to it.

DanC: Bandwidth usage is not the issue ... I have to set an example (in the workplace) regarding usage of the T1. We have about 500 folks doing internet and email on it and if all of them were to nibble at it we would have problems. I hate conducting bandwidth usage jihads ... especially if I am one of the reprobates!

In the zip file for the software there will be a readme to get you started. The pproxy itself is actually pretty easy to setup. Stats generating software is a little more complicated. On that subject, I just realized that I pointed you to the stats software, rather than the pproxy software, which is actually here..

If you run in to anything you can't figure out, post here, we'll do what we can to help.😀

Dave, Entirely understandable. I often must set an example for my engineers even though I myself don't necessarily believe it's a problem. 🙂

DanC ... I'm in a slightly more precarious position ... I'm an engineer managing IT folk ... They just know I'm up to something and they're determined to catch me at it! ... joke .. They're great, but not Anandtech'ers in any sense of the work .. err word.
