A couple of years ago at Macy's, I bought a bunch of business clothes at the register. Including shoes. Apparently shoes are paid for at another counter, and without knowing it I walked out with a $120 pair of Ecco shoes without paying.

I considered bringing them back. But as an excuse for myself, I hear stories about people being hassled for shoplifting, so decided not to bother.

If you're ok with how you "saved" $120, you don't have any abhorrence towards yourself.

That's stupid that they can't ring through every item in one single register. I would not worry about it, it's their own stupidity for having a crappy setup. They expect me to go in line twice? screw them. I would just play dumb. I bet lot of people do it just because they don't feel like going through two cashes, not to mention having to do 2 transactions, thus 2 service charges.

That was it mostly. The new job kept me very busy and I had the errand of going back to pay hanging over my head for a couple weeks. Eventually I just said screw them I don't have time to go back there, saving money was a bonus but not the main reason I didn't take them back

And I did read other people online say they got accused of shoplifting when they brought stuff back, didnt want to deal with the hassle

I once bought a $19.99 oscillating at Ames and the cashier rang it up as $1.99. I didn't notice until I got home. The excuse I used to make it OK was that I probably get screwed all the time in the other direction and never notice. And then Ames went out of business. What have I done?

I did feel a bit guilty because I doubt Macy's ever overcharged me. But grocery stores, definitely a give and take relationship. I know they've screwed me before (especially per lbs. items) so I take advantage of any mistake
