I'm not sure I understand all this ire about month dedications. What would you like to do about it? Pass a federal law banning the dedication of months to any specific constituency? That's not small-government conservatism, kids.

Straw man, no one suggested it.

Are you fixated on the federal government ideology that much that you miss the issue?

What? There are more than a few posts in this thread where people are upset or annoyed with these dedications. That's what I was responding to.

He's just trolling, ignore this shit. I'm a heartbeat away from honoring him with the fist spot on my ignore list.

What took you so long?

Back to the OP - There's a reason Virginia was always on the fence.
Have you ever been to Virginia?

I guess all that lynching that occurred after the civil war doersn't count.

Almost like fighting a bloody war and losing only to see their land burnt to the ground would make them bitter.

I was thinking more to do with the actual Confederacy and the war itself, not the aftermath. The terrible acts that followed the fall of the Confederacy are not what it signifies and stood for.

It symbolizes the act of secession which goes along with the liberty this nation once had. The ultimate check and balance against a corrupt Union would be to leave it. We lost that right and our corruption runs amok this day.

Remembering it =/= Honoring it with a month

The Germans don't have Nazi history month

[/Godwin's Law]

Agree totally. I'm all for teaching history, but four years' fighting in a shameful cause does NOT deserve a month to celebrate it.

Should add that I'm a big supporter of states' rights - but not the right to keep people as property.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt that the Governor isn't trying to celebrate slavery in this case. I'm sure it's more of a history awareness thing, but he has to realize that it's going to offend many people, regardless of his intentions.

I personally don't mind, but my ancestors didn't suffer through slavery, either. As long as the intentions are good, I don't see a problem with it, but like I said, not everyone is going to feel that way, and it's going to put some distance between a few minorities and the Republican party.

I think they are still the same. Ever hear the phrase, "soft bigotry of low expectations?"

Maybe they aren't wearing white robes any more, but they are still holding the brothers down. For their own good, just like before.

But, let's keep it classy! ()🙂

No way man, housing projects, welfare, and the cycle of dependence on the government are for their own good.

You do realize the reason we have these "stupid" history months, white boys ignored the contributions of minorities throughout time. I think your objections are slightly misdirected.

Is a contribution to society better if a black man accomplishes it? It's odd that people strive to eliminate racism yet trumpet race every chance they get.

In general no but you have not answered the question, why were pains taken to exclude noteworthy achievments by blacks in history creating a need for black history month.

Exclusion created these voids.

MTV begat BET
History begat Black History Month

Haley Barbour doubles down on the wink...wink to the racists.

"To me, it's a sort of feeling that it's a nit, that it is not significant, that it's not a — it's trying to make a big deal out of something (that) doesn't amount to diddly,"

"I don't really see what to say about slavery, but anybody that thinks that you have to explain to some people that slavery is a bad thing, I think that goes without saying," Barbour said.

Celebrating the confederacy and no mention of slavery not a big deal, doean't amount to diddly? Oakely doakely Haley!!
