I had a vasectomy.

that should also be in your poll.

No way should it be added. I don't know who would prefer a vasectomy over their woman taking BC. BC FTW!

I do have a ? about a vasectomy though. Do you shoot blanks (meaning nothing at all) or is it just clear when it comes out?

if your married and no longer want children, a vasectomy is the safest, most effective, birth control short of a woman having a hysterectomy.

for all your vasectomy questions.

When the vasectomy is complete, sperm can no longer exit the body through the penis. They are broken down and absorbed by the body. Much fluid content is absorbed by membranes in the epididymis, and much solid content is broken down by macrophages and re-absorbed via the blood stream. Sperm is matured in the epididymis for about a month once it leaves the testicles, and approximately 50% of the sperm produced never make it to ejaculation in a non-vasectomized man. After vasectomy, the membranes increase in size to absorb more fluid, and more macrophages are recruited to break down and re-absorb more of the solid content. Though much of the content that can no longer exit the body is reabsorbed by these macrophages, examination has shown that, over time, essentially every vasectomized man also experiences an epididymal blowout, which is the formation of a sperm granuloma in the epididymis, to relieve the high intra-luminal pressures in the delicate epididymal tubules

... That doesn't sound good.

wait, so what cums out when you *skeet skeet skeet*?

Seriously, we always get this in here. IMHO it's absolutely moronic.

Condoms are 98% effective over a period of one year, which means that the odds of not getting pregnant using condoms for a ten year period are (98/100)^10=81.7%. This means that if you use condoms alone there is a 19% chance of pregnancy within ten years. Ditto for the pill at 98% effectiveness. When you use both however, the odds of failure in any given year are .02^2= 0.04%
Thus the ten year success rate for using both methods at the same time is (99.96/100)^10=99.6%
Thus using both at the same time yields a 0.4% chance of pregnancy over ten years, compared to 19% with just one or the other. You are 47.5 times more likely to cause a pregnancy using just one option than you are with both.

Edit: Now that we have the real numbers posted, let's repeat the ten year calculations using those. Perfect use of the pill is listed at 0.3% failure per year, that gives us 3% failure over ten years. Perfect use of condoms is still 19% failure over ten years. Combine the two and you get a chance of failure in any given year of (2%*.3%)= 0.006%.
That yields a ten year failure rate of 1-0.99994^10=.0006=.06% for both methods at the same time. You are still about fifty times more likely to get pregnant using just the pill as you are with the pill and condoms.

Now let's use the typical use numbers. 15% failure for condoms, 8% for the pill. .85^10=.197 meaning that with condoms alone you only have a 19.7% chance of avoiding pregnancy over ten years. .92^10=43.4% chance of avoiding pregnancy for ten years. Combined method: .15*.08=1.2% chance of pregnancy over one year
(1-.012)^10=88.6% success rate over ten years.
Under typical use, even using the combination of both condoms and the pill still results in an 11.3% chance of pregnancy over a ten year period.
Your figures smell fishy to me.

For 1, I believe that the stated 98% effectiveness regards protection not pregnancy. To explain, that means success and failure are counted on, say, whether or not the condom broke, not whether or not somebody did or did not get pregnant. If what you said were true, then in 100 instances of sex with a condom, the woman should get pregnant twice.

2nd, certain probable outcomes of an event do not become more probable the more times they are repeated. That is called the Gambler's fallacy. If condoms were tested over 1 year and found to have a failure rate of 2%, you cannot conclude that in two years you will experience 4% failure. That's like saying you flipped a coin 100 times and found that heads has a 50% probability, so when you flip the coin 200 times you can expect 100% probability.

I'm married now... never used a condom in my life. Why bother when there is a pill/patch/ring available?

BC. We did a lot of research about effectiveness beforehand. Four years and no babies yet. :D

Condoms suck. BCPs are too easy to make a mistake with. I was on the pill for a number of years, then Norplant for a few years, then Depo shots, now spouse has had a vasectomy so I don't have to worry about it anymore.

My take on the whole issue is that a responsible woman who isn't ready for children will be on birth control and if she's with a new partner, they must use condoms until they've both been tested for STDs and are completely monogamous. If they are really, really worried about pregnancy, continue using condoms along with some other kind of birth control. If a man doesn't trust a woman he's in a monogamous relationship with to be truthful about being on reliable birth control, he shouldn't be having sex with her at all.

My wife and I use both.

IF we had kids, it would be bad, very bad for everyone involved.

Just how many people are involved?

my parents disowning us for abortion, but if she couldn't cope with that, the next step would be the neglect charges I'm sure would be filed.

Really, we are not ready for kids, we are selfish needy work driven with very private lives who love quiet. We have no time for anything thing that would take time out of our lives.

We recently tried to baby sit her 10 year old nephew. I had to physically leave the house. I was about to kill him. He didn't do a single thing wrong, he was just freaking annoying.

What makes you have to tell them if you had an abortion?

Besides, if your parents don't accept other points of view(abortion), and don't respect that you are your own person who makes your own decisions, you have a few things to work out.

Also, from a guys perspective, unless you really trust the girl I wouldn't rely on her to take the pill every day. When the Male BC pill comes out that will be less of an issue.

QFT and from a woman no less. :p

Also a lot of women have a loss of libido when on BC pill. Kinda a downer, you can have safer sex now but she is not in the mood anymore. :(

Condoms suck for obvious reasons, BC pills increase the risk for heart disease and can cause emotional issues (among other things).

I'm anticipating a vasectomy after the Wifey and I finish having kids.

In the meantime, it's an IUD.

condom, then vasectomy.

when i was younger, i selfishly said BC, then I had first hand experience with how it causes blood clots, and watching my wife have to take painful lovenox and heparin injections nightly so that we wouldn't lose our baby. her stomach was covered in fist sized brusies for 9+ months (the injections cause internal bleeding).

in short, this poll shouldn't be the selfish immature joke that it is. but like a lot of things in life, you don't learn your lesson ti you live it.

Don't take hormonal BC lightly. It can be very dangerous. In retrospect, i shoulda just wrapped it up, and when i'm done havin kids, i'm gonna be getting the snip-snip.

Most women don't have a drop in sex drive when on BCPs. If yours did, she had other options. There are other reasons a woman doesn't want to have sex. Not liking her partner very much (like having a fight) is right up there at #1. You sure she wasn't blaming it on the pill when it was something else?

Actually a lot more BC pills do cause a woman to lose her libido. It was nevered looked into as why find out the bad things your drug does, it only hurts sales. Most studies I have seen are less then 5 years old as its something that most don;t want to talk about with their doctor and it does not cause injury/death so the drug makers don;t care (i.e. no lawsuits).

I think the patch and some other ones work better if a woman has that problem but of course they have their cons as well.

Lola

we have not used condoms in over 6 years.
I love the Patch and it is my top choice for birth control. I don't think i could have sex with my spouse if we had to use condoms.

You say "selfishly," but I'd happily pop BC pills once they come out for men. In fact, I'd prefer it.
