Concurrent Hyper-V VMs?

Is it possible to run a server with more than 4 VM guests on it (2008 R2)? I read that there is a limit on it... and if so what needs to be done?

You can run as many Hyper-V guests as you want. Well, actually there's a limit of 384.

Server 2008 Standard Edition gives you a license to install a bare Hyper-V server (with nothing installed in it) and one fully functional Server 2008 virtual machine. You can install other operating systems, but you have to have licenses for them.

Server 2008 Enterprise Edition gives licenses for four Server 2008 Virtual Machines. Data Edition gives unlimited licenses for virtual Server 2008 machines.

The realistic limit is hardware based, not software.

thanks! if you try to install more than 4 server 2008 guests on enterprise, i wonder what happens?

Same thing that would happen if you tried to install that same copy on 4 extra real machines...

Yeah if you want more than 4 VMs of server 2008, you just get more server 2008 licenses. As said before, it will also be limited by the hardware in terms of performance so make sure you have a beefy server you are running this on.
