Conclusion: Volcano 7 sucks, will pretty much ANY cooler be any better than this??

I'm sitting at a nice toasty 57C idle on my XP 1500+ oc'ed to 1.7ghz. I just cleaned all the dust off the fins and re-applied AS3 per instructions. It was 57C before, and is sitll 57C. I leave it OC'ed, because the difference between stock speed and OC'ed this much is only 1-2C. I have a Panaflo 80mm H1A on it now.

Basically my question is.........am I at the bottom of the barrel as far as coolers goes and I can only pretty much go up from here? (I bought it when I was just a newb all of a month and a half ago, had no clue, it was cheap, looked like it wouldnt be too bad).

Running on an Asus A7V333......after reading and reading, I'm thinking this weeks paycheck is going to fun a PAL 8045, whacchu guys think? 🙂

I know it does 🙂 If I go off the socket thermistor, it idles around 43-44C, but goddamnit, thats not good enough! 🙂 If I'm gonna have real temp readings, I want REAL cooling 🙂

The only thing I dont get though, is that I had this exact same thing in another cheap-o case until a few days ago, and the CPU idled @ 52-54C depending on room temp. Then I switched cases (now I have MUCH better case flow) and my temp goes up 4C at idle. I've even resorted to taking my case side off, cause I'm just not comfortable with the temp right now.

Or IS a TRUE 58-60C temp at idle perfectly safe as well as acceptable for this processor? OC or not.

57 degrees for that board isn't bad at all. It should be 100% stable at that temp. I wouldn't worry unless it goes past 65-70 degrees.

You can buy a new HSF but the only thing it's gonna do maybe is lower temps. What good is that if your already 100% stable?

Well Volcano 7 is defenately not the worst! Im using the one that came with the processor (AMD), sucks, but Im getting a Volcano 7+ which should be a good bang for the buck.

I want to lower temps so I can *try* and raise the OC some more 😀 Or just plain run cooler at the speed I'm at now.

what I did (I have Volcano 7 as well) is I thoguth my temps were too high, so I cut off the thermomo-thing (green device) and just attached the two wires together, giving it full power. Lowered CPU temp by 20 degrees F, but in turn raised the noise level considerably. Or, you could take off the fan, and go with a Vantec Tornado (loud as hell, if hell is really damn loud 😉) but damn it's a good colling fan!

The stock fan has long since been replaced. I have a Panaflo H1A on there now, not the quietest Panaflo out there, but ALOT quieter than the Smart fan they put on the HS in the first place.

WOOO HOO!! But today I realized why my CPU idle temp went up 3-4 degrees just by changing cases, even though I added rounded cables and a few more case fans and tidied stuff up in my new case..........

Its all because of THIS!!! 🙂

I couldnt understand at all why the simple case change would change my CPU temp that much, but luckily I could test this after I thought of it, as there are a few 2" or so diameter holes in my mobo tray to start with, and one just happened to be nearly right behind where the CPU sits on my mobo. I slapped the fan on there (80mm fan blowing through a 2" hole, we arent even talking fully capable cooling yet) and it dropped core temp 3-4C regardless of ambient/case temps 🙂 This makes me very happy knowing it was actually pretty effective. When was the last time you added a 13CFM fan to your case and dropped your core temp 4C? 🙂 Its a Panaflo FBA08T L1A.

I'm still gonna get a new HS anyways 😛

AND my behind-the-board fan drops mobo temp 2C as well.

Jeff

*Edit, decided I was a little too smiley happy, deleted some 😀
