Money was the least of Conan's worries, he had been doing Late Night for a looooong time and the progression was the Tonight Show. It was his career and it was his passion. So if you look at it, he did get FUCKED from a progression point of view. Monetarily, no one feels sorry for him and he wouldn't want them to either.

I don't recall the time Conan gave Leno a show and then took it back. But that's probably because it didn't happen.

Your comparison would only be valid if NBC promised Jimmy Fallon the Tonight Show after Conan had been on the air for 18 years, and then Conan complained.

Oh, and Conan's lutheran/catholic joke at the end of the interview was gold.

Not really... Back in 2004ish Conan's contract was up so he was getting offers from other networks to be their 10:30 show. NBC didn't want to have to compete with Conan so they told him Leno would be retiring in a few years (also Leno's ratings were down at the time) so he could have the Tonight show if he stuck it out a few more years in the Late Night show. Conan was fine with it, Leno was fine with it, NBC was really happy not to lose Conan. Five years later Leno doesn't want to retire any more and his ratings are better than ever so NBC doesn't want to lose him, thus Conan got fucked hardcore. He could have had a 10:30 show six years ago, but he stuck around because he thought he would be hosting the tonight show.

OK, everyone keeps saying "HE GOT 30 MILLION" or whatever. I think it's pretty clear by now that he could CARE LESS about the money. In fact, he blew most of it on a production company to keep his staff working. He would much rather be hosting the Tonight Show than be paid off.

It's like saying "Hey Neil Armstrong! We're going to let you be the first man on the moon! OK ready? We're about to blast off! 5...4...3...2..oh wait. We changed our minds. We're going to get someone else. Here's $30 million for your trouble."
