June 10 (Bloomberg) -- Conan O?Brien, host of NBC?s ?Tonight Show? for less than two weeks, lost the late-night ratings lead to CBS?s David Letterman for the first time since taking over from Jay Leno.

O?Brien attracted 2.9 percent of U.S. television homes last night from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., a smaller audience than ?Late Show With David Letterman,? which drew 3.4 percent, New York-based CBS Corp. said today in an e-mail, citing preliminary data from Nielsen Co.

O?Brien?s audience has shrunk each night since he replaced Leno on June 1. Last night?s viewership was down 59 percent from O?Brien?s debut. Letterman?s has increased 13 percent in the past week. He last outdrew Leno in viewers on Oct. 16, when presidential candidate John McCain was a guest, and Oct. 17, when his show featured actress Tina Fey of ?30 Rock? and ?Saturday Night Live,? CBS said.

NBC parent General Electric Co., based in Fairfield, Connecticut, fell 31 cents to $13.26 at 2:12 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares had declined 16 percent this year before today.

CBS, owner of the most-watched television network in prime time, fell 33 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $8.35 at 2:12 p.m. Before today the shares had gained 6 percent this year.

Nielsen will release detailed viewership information tomorrow for last week?s ?Tonight Show? and ?Late Show? programs.

Old people like Letterman, young people like Conan. Everyone wanted to see Conan's debut though, that's why it was so big. Falloff was expected. Anyways, I'll continue to watch both thanks to tivo 😀 - But I do like Conan a lot more.

Don't really watch much late night talk shows anymore, because The Daily Show and Colbert Report come on at the same time here, but was hoping Conan would do ok. I'm guessing the Old people just are not liking him much.

Give him six months. All the retards who watch that crap will be tuned and hanging on his every word because there isn't anything else on.

I liked his late show better than I like the current format.. though I would like to see more Andy Richter..

I miss Leno. 🙁

I miss leno also. His last couple of weeks were pretty damn good.

Conan is painful to watch. The only one more uncomfortable to watch is jimmy fallon - which is too bad since I've liked him in everything else he's done. Remember chevy chase? Another one that I liked for the most part but failed miserably at the talk show gig.

It seems that the networks are laying a blanket of strange mediocrity down at night.

??? Conan is pretty much the most un-political talk show there is. He rarely, if ever, has any real talk of it. He might crack a joke or two at a politician, but it isn't party specific.

Conan is amazing. I find him much funnier than either Leno or Letterman. That focus group sketch last night was perfectly timed for these ratings to come out

Great, so the elderly stopped watching. Big deal. I'm watching now and I wasn't a watcher of either the tonight show or late night before.

I've never been polled or asked what I watch. How do folks know what I'm watching? Other than polling a comically small sample audience, where do they get these ratings?

I used to watch Leno, Conan, and Daily every night. Now I get to watch Conan only and I wouldn't miss it for the world. He's hilarious. Comedic genius.

There is something wrong with you if you're bringing up politics in this thread.

Just because conan spent the last 8 years making fun of bush doesn't make him a 'lefty'.

I think most people realize that bush was an easy target because he was incompetent as fuck and talked like a retard... an easy target for any comedian, despite political leanings.

Seconded. But apparently anymore you can't go two seconds without somebody saying something to do with politics.

While it looks bad, I don't think this should've been unexpected for him. Conan is a fairly polarizing personality, Jay plays it way safer (as does Letterman). I'm glad that they're mostly letting Conan be how he was before, but I doubt that lasts (wherein people will call him a sellout).

I dislike Fallon, but they've certainly been giving him enough stuff to be successful.
