I just turned it on. It is very much not in HD. This is the OTA NBC broadcast of episode for the 27th.

Looks like the local broadcast studio resampled it so it looks like a widescreen version at 480i.

It certainly was in HD here....😕

Looked like crap to me tonight.

Strange. It was definitely 1080i here though. 😀

Wait... I didn't even really read the thread. You need an over the air HD tuner to get the benefits, right?

Yes (or QAM in my case, since I got it over cable).

I was just using regular cable, but it actually look sh!ttier standard cable. It had a bunch of lines throught it (I assume from whatever they did to make it a 480i signal for regular cable).

Well duh, you're not gonna get an HD signal without an HD tuner....😉 (n00b) 😛

I (obviously) wasn't watching the stanard analog cable feed, so I don't know if that looked differently than it normally would or not. It shouldn't be any different than the usual though...😕

I thought it was going to be at least a little better looking if it was kept in HD longer before being changed to 480i.

It was significantly worse than normal though which is what I was really confused about.

Eh...maybe someone in the control room didn't know what they were doing for the SD feed, or something. 😛

I should have taken a pic. There were a bunch of very visible horizontal lines through it.

Do you live in San Antonio and were you watching the OTA broadcast?

Everything on channel 4-1 is broadcasted in 1080i but that doesn't mean the native signal was in 1080i to begin with.

As for this show, it was in an unusual format. The show was closest to 480i widescreen (not letterbox) converted into a 1080i signal. And it did not look good at all. Barely better than the 4-2 channel digital 480i broadcast. I suspect the local broadcast station is not aware of the switch and they are still fooling with the signal.

In other news, The Tonight Show has looked great for the past year or so. It is always in HD as long as it is taped in his LA studio.

Wow, that is fast. The Conan O'Brien HD Premiere is already posted at alt.bi......., 2 hours after being shown. 😉

Actually no, I'm in College Station for school right now...and I got the broadcast over cable (which I believe comes from Waco, since there is no NBC station broadcasting digitally in the immediate area here). It was perfect 1080i, most certainly not upconverted from 480i. I'm really surprised that a small town had no problems and San Antonio was having trouble. 😕
