I am looking around for components for a brand new build. I am going to use the PC basically for running CPU intensive simulations. Not much gaming, no overclocking (atleast not in the near future) . Budget is around $1000 including the display. What do you guys think of this : ?

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition,
MOBO: Asus M4A78-E, AMD 790GX,
POWER: Corsair CMPSU-650TX, 650W,
CASE: Cooler Master RC-690-KKN1-GP, inkl
Memory: Mushkin XP2-8500 2x2GB Radioactive

Lite-On iHAS322-31, 22x DVD-Writer
Western Digital Caviar Blue, 7200rpm, 16MB, 640GB, SATA-II
BenQ G2220HD, 21.5" TFT Wide 16:9, DVI-D,

Since this is the first time I put a PC together (I have upgraded existing PCs though) are there any parts like power/data connectors that is usually missing by default ?

Looks good to me. The motherboard should come with SATA cables for your hard drive. According to Newegg, it comes with two SATA cables and a PATA cable. Unless you're buying OEM parts, they come with all the necessary hardware and software to install them.
