Hopefully it will. I don't now if it's Froyo or something else that I've changed, but my battery life on my Mesmerize has been crap every since I updated.

Keep in mind, the same was said about Froyo 18 months ago. And we all know how that turned out. :p

18 months? Vibrant was the first Galaxy S phone released in the US and that was late June '10. Little over 9 months.

I bet i9000 will receive official Gingerbread before most HTC phones.

Remember this. I would love to see Samsung bring their A-game this time around, I really would, but I'm not going to hold my breathe. Especially since the Fascinate is still waiting for its Froyo upgrade.

2.2 is definitely worse for battery life than 2.1. I'd suggest an undervolted kernel.

So Motorola finally released Froyo to the Telus Milestone customers. I think we beat out some Fascinate users yeah? :D HELL YEAH. 1 YEAR LATER

It is quite obvious that Samsung has released Froyo out to the carriers. At this point I can't truly blame Samsung anymore, the only reason the Fascinate hasn't gotten Froyo is Verizon.

Obviously Samsung had some issues, but other Galaxy S phones have gotten their updates and that is even with that god awful thing Sprint calls Sprint ID. If Sprint can release Froyo after spending Im sure months installing that trash then Verizon has some of their own issues releasing it.

Gingerbread update for Galaxy S to start rolling out in mid April

Where's your beloved HTC and their official Gingerbread update? I told you Galaxy S would get their update soon. It's obvious when i9000 got their Froyo update Sept '10 that Samsung isn't the problem. It's the US carriers that control the updates and everything about the phone, not the device makers. Phones sold outside the US are not locked down by the carriers and they receive their update. I know you have this weird obsession hate for Samsung and Galaxy S but maybe the problem isn't Samsung but Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Fascinate people have nobody to blame other than Verizon since the same exact CDMA phone outside the US got their Froyo.

Seriously, if ATT/T-mo weren't my only two choices for GSM service I would probably switch just so I don't need to deal with carrier-specific firmware bs.

True. People from Samsung have indicated that Verizon has received Froyo, and they did a long time ago. The problem is that Verizon can't morph it to their liking without introducing new bugs.

You can link when an update "should" come out all you want, but the fact is that historically, Samsung has said an update was coming very soon and it ended up not coming many, many, many times, while HTC and Motorola have had updates come out in a very timely manner on a consistent basis. Surely that one link isn't enough to make you completely ignore consistent past actions by these companies.

That said, 2.3 coming to Galaxy S phones early could happen simply because the Nexus S is just a slightly tuned of Galaxy S phone and it has it. At this point however, even if Android 2.3 came out for every Galaxy S phone tomorrow, Samsung would still be considered crappy for keeping their software up to date. One exception isn't enough to make up for a lifetime of poorly supported products. If they release the next 5+ Android versions in a timely manner, then they can be considered to be a company that supports their products nicely.

This, thanks for saving me the trouble of writing it. :)

Yet another reason for rooting. I have had GB on my Eris for a couple months now and i am sure the T-bolt GB leak will surface a couple weeks before the official update.

Supposedly at a bare minimum you need a 1GHZ processor. Right off the bat they eliminate almost half of all Android phones.

More importantly you need 512mb of RAM.. 256 is NOT ENOUGH. The Milestone development team is stripping CM7 of some stuff and we're always running into memory issues. So 384mb and up devices at least I'd say. Too bad Droid. Not even 2 years old yet.

Droid incredible already on Gingerbread (CM7 RC4)
Nook Color already on Gingerbread (CM7 RC4 with tablet tweaks)

Done and done.

This was proven false a long time ago, as evidenced both from Google's official statements and the fact that a number of sub-1Ghz phones running unofficial GB builds. RAM is a much more important spec than SoC speed.

Up until Monday morning, I was running Project Elite 5.x on my Droid, its GB based. I did not encounter any serious RAM issues. It took up a lot more space on the internal storage, so I had to remove some of my lesser used apps to make everything play nice. This was a big factor in my getting the Thunderbolt. In general though, I would agree, you're going to want more RAM for GB.

Have to check, do LG's low end Optimus phones have 512MB of RAM? The Vortex on VZW and the others that are on Cricket, Boost, and Virgin Mobile, for example. CPU wise, they'll be fine. But these are fairly common low end Android phones, they're usually free on contract.

Edit -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Optimus_One

They've got 512MB of RAM.

I'm going to assume that 2.3 is the last upgrade the Droid X is going to get. Now that the phone is slowly disappearing from the marketplace, Motorola will probably quit their development work on updates and do their best to convince you to upgrade to a newer model.
