Computers can see and connect to Wireless router but no internet, Please help :)

I have ATT DSL 3mb down.

I have a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router

I have one computer (main comp) wired to the router running xp

i have a p3 dell lappy running xp connected to the router and connecting to the internet through wireless

I have 2 Piii machines using win2000 that have netgear wireless cards. They can see and connect to the router but cannot connect to the internet.

I have done the ipconfig/release and renew and get the following error message

can not connect to the DHCP server

If you can shed any light on this subject, it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

jam

the router is set to Acquire an IP Address Automatically from a DHCP Server

haven't tried static ip's for the two comps not working. may try that later

how do you set up static ip's for the comps?

thanks

the router should be acting as a dhcp server. I'm not too familiar with buffalo products, so i don't know if this is an option your router has... it should be since it's a router.

to set up your machines for static IP addresses go into control panel>network connections>properties on your active lan connection>TCP/IP properties

Fill in the appropriate info.

Defaults should be something like
ip: 192.168.1.101
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gw: 192.168.1.1 (IP of your router)
DNS should be same as GW.

this should work. advice, grain of salt... etc etc.

A little clarification....

I'm assuming the router is connected with its WAN port to the DSL device and that your DSL service is dynamic (or DHCP). Then the wireless computers are connecting to the router.

Here is what has to happen.
1) The router has to be setup to be a DHCP client on the WAN port. Then the DSL service will give the router an IP, DNS addresses, Gateway, etc.....
2) The router has to also be setup to be a DHCP server to your LAN computers (those connecting wirelessly or by wire to the LAN ports, if you have any LAN ports on the router)
3) Each computer connecting to the router needs to be a DHCP client (in WIndows, this is found in TCP/IP properties under the network connection properties. configure the computers to get addresses and DNS automatically)

Again, the router needs to be a DHCP client to the DSL device and a DHCP server to your computers.

k, that sounds good, but how do i set up the router to do that?

Read this.

Pay attention to the part about LAN configuration and Advanced DHCP (pp. 28 & 29).

If you cannot figure it out from these instructions, do one of two things:
1) Find a technically astute friend to help you do the initial configuration.
2) Call Buffalo 866-752-6210

Let me see if I understand correctly.

You have a Wireless Laptop and a main computer that are using the Router and they aer work well.

If this is correct you should concentrate on the w2k computers since it seems that your Router's core Internet connection is working OK.

What to you mean when you state: "I have 2 Piii machines using win2000 that have netgear wireless cards. They can see and connect to the router but cannot connect to the internet".

How do you that the LAN Wireless is OK, Can you exchange fies between your man computer and these the win2000?

How do you mange the Wireless with the Win2000 computer, unlike WinXP Win2000 needs the Wireless cards origianl utility since there is No WZC in Win2000.

Do you have Wireless security set between the Working Wireless Laptop and the Router.

If you do the same exacat security has to be set in the Win2000 computers.

yes the security is working on the xp laptop and yes the original installation utilities are installed on the w2k comps.
