Night before last my machine fired itself at 1 am for no reason. It didn't even boot properly, it just a black screen with a green dotted line across the top. The power mgmt always wakes the machine up at 5:30am so 1am is very out of character.

Now, this would seem curious, but not demonic. Last night, my wifes computer booted and when I found it this morning it had the same dang-diggily-dangit green bar across the top. Hers also uses PM to boot at 6 am.

I didn't give mine the opportunity to start up without me last night because I shut it down at the surge protector. The only component they have in common is a Nvidia based vid card. Neither have WOL or Wake on anything enabled. Symantec says they are virus free.

Anyone have any ideas what's causing this? I'm going to put a bible by each of them and see if they still do it. I was wondering if sunspot activity could trigger this. Feel free to spout off, but keep in mind it's in Hardware and not Off Topic.

HAHA!!! ROFL... :D:):D
Well it could be something to do when the power comes back i might spark the PSU into action which makes your computer start. But I am not sure what the green line thing is... :( But thats all I can come up with, the power coming through the cable and sparking ti off.

Albert.

P.S: Keep a cross beside them too :p Never know...

Good luck!

found this on gf faq section & may apply to you.

Q. Windows locks up before it finishes loading, and a thin green line may appear across the top of the screen. How can I fix it?
This may be caused by the Backup utility supplied with Windows 9x attempting to detect new tape devices on boot. You can fix it by deleting the files drvwppqt.vxd and drvwq117.vxd in the Windows\System\Iosubsys directory. If this helps, then search for the string 'TAPEDETECT' in your registry and delete any entries that exist. If you find this causes your tape drive to stop working, you'll have to reinstall Microsoft Backup. You can also simply uninstall Microsoft Backup if you don't use it.

Try updating the motherboard's BIOS. In particular on some Gigabyte boards based on the VIA KT133 chipset this may fix the problem. See the following page for more information:
http://www.giga-byte.com/faq/question/question_kt133.htm

You may find that on motherboards that are only AGP 1.0 compliant you may be able to fix this problem by putting insulating tape over the last pair of contacts on the AGP connector on the GeForce card (the contact furthest from the monitor port, on both sides). This has been tested on the Chaintech 6BTM motherboard.

Try disabling the Windows startup sound.

Make sure that VSYNC is enabled in the NVIDIA control panel.

If you have IomegaWare installed, try uninstalling it. If this fixes the problem, just use Iomega Guest.
