Hi,

Build a new computer with an Asus P5Q-E motherboard.

I've installed Vista x64 and when I choose shutdown, Vista close, screen goes blank but the computer and all fans stay on. I have to manually press the power button on the case to shut it down.

It goes to sleep mode without trouble.

BIOS has still default value for power management, so ACPI and APIC is enabled but ACPI 2.0 is disabled.

I never had that kind of problem with my old pc and win xp.

What should I look for ?

thanks

I'm having a similar issue. My shuts down, but after it goes off, it immediately powers back on.

THe only way I can shut it down is hitting the power switch on the power supply.

(XP SP3).

Most likely its one of your hardware or software drivers is not 100% Vista 64 compatible.
It sounds like it may be hanging up in memory and when Vista is attempting to do a OS
shutdown, one of your drivers is not releasing its self from memory. The best you can do
is try to get the latest drivers from your vendors for your motherboard, disk controller,
sound card and video card.

I have been reading a LOT of threads across the net about these boards having issues with shutting down. I am seeing a LOT of different fixes too.

Weird part is I've had this thing for a while now and it just started doing this when I switched cases.

I had it in my HTPC case with a 4850 video card.

I bought me a brand new P5Q because I liked it so well. I took my older board out of the HTPC case (because I wanted to use the E8400 in my main rig) and set the new board up with an older E7650 cpu with the stock HS&F (htpc case is tiny).

After I reassembed this thing back into my mid tower, the thing just will NOT stay powered off. As soon as it powers off, it boots right back up.

Weirdest thing I have ever seen. The ONLY thing different with this thing is the video card. I went from a 4850 to a 4870. Maybe it is my video card drivers?

Weird I tell ya.

That would be my guess or even the mobo drivers... Do you have a sound card? My X-Fi card is amazing at causing weird hangs...

I just installed Cat 8.8 last night. Didn't help anything.

I have a ghost image of this thing after I installed the OS and did all the patching and windows update. I'm going to try loading that image on an old hard drive and see if that resolves it. If so I'll just wipe my disk and reimage it.

I REALLY need to stop partitioning my OS hard drive. It gets to be a real pain when I need to wipe it. Sometimes imaging over a partition doesn't do well enough and need to wipe the whole drive. I have 100 to 150 gigs of other stuff on the other partitions I'm going to need to "move".

I think I'm going to buy me some 250gig drives and use them JUST for the OS... no other partitions.

BTW, my mobo is a P5Q Pro.... NOT P5Q-E. For whatever that's worth. and I'm using the built in sound hardware. I have it set to AC97 also, not HD.

This kind of thing happened to me also and I had to trace back what I installed last and worked my way back to find the culprit.
Try a simple system resore to an earlier date to see if it changes anything. It will also give you an idea of what software/drivers that will be gone and it will likely reduce your search time.
