A friend of mines computer just stopped turning on one day. I really don't know anything about the computer other than that it was built for them not store bought. I don't think that they tried to do anything special to it like upgrades or anything and all of a sudden it just wouldn't turn on. Could it be the power supply or is there something else that could cause this to happen? Thank you in advance for any help that you can give me.

Funny thought but it could be the switch on the case. Try shorting the power switch pins on the motherboard with a screwdriver or something metal and see if it turns on.

Could a virus cause a computer to completely shutdown a computer. Apparently he was getting the blue screen of death a lot right before it stopped turning on? I haven't heard of one, but I also haven't heard of 3/4 of computer problems and everything else computers.

Maybe a virus could spontaneously shut your computer down but I don't know of any that could prevent you from starting it back up.

Now it's sounding like it could be the PSU. If he was getting BSODs before the failure it could have been because of irregularities in the PSUs power delivery, signaling it's impending death.

If you have an extra PSU that you can temporarily use to test this theory then that would be a good place to start.

Thank you for all of your help. I was thinking it could be the power supply, but wasn't really for sure. I will try to use a different one and see what happens.
