Computer won't start - Please help

I just finished building my new computer, but it won't boot at all. When I apply power in the suggested manner, only the Motherboard's LED goes on, nothing else. When I press the power button on the case, after that, the case fan moves a little, and then, nothing.

What's wrong, and how do I fix it?

Asus A7V333
AMD XP1800
Enermax 400w PS (dual fan)
GF4
NIC
40gb Maxtor quantum fireball
512ddr crucial pc2100 RAM
alpha pal8045 heatsink
delta 80mm case fan

each drive's connected to its own ide cable

Double check all connections & make sure all leads are on right way and the video card is fully seated, try clearing the BIOS & last resort is to take the board out of the case and see if it will boot up(might be a grounding problem).

I will keep checking connections, and I'm going to look in Asus' online manual to see if things have been updated.

How do I clear the BIOS?

How do I clear the BIOS?

Depends on the board, some have a jumper you move over, others like on quite a few Asus boards have two soldered points you short with a metal object, check your manual for that, also taking the CMOS battery out for awhile should do it.

How do I clear the BIOS?

Check your user manual....but this might help.
There should be a jumper on your MB that has 3 pins and a jumper covers 2 of the 3. Look near the battery on your MB. To clear the CMOS info, you would just move the jumper to the other position (there are only 2), wait a few seconds, then return the jumper to it's original position.

This is not your problem however......I'd bet on it. It sounds like you are having a power related problem.

Some ideas......

Check your powersupply, there is probably a red togle switch that says either 110 or 220 on it. Make sure it's set to the correct AC voltage setting for your location. I'm in the USA, so I'm at 110v

The cables that run from your case to the motherboard: Verify they're installed correctly. If you're not sure, leave it disconnected for now.

Like "Mem" said above.....check for grounding...i.e. wires or screws touching the motherboard.

remove all cards and connectors from the board except for the processor and 1 stick of ram. Does the system turn on and fans spin now? If so, add one piece of equipment until the problem occurs. If problem still exists, then you can rule out the stuff your removed (keep it out for now).

Hope this helps.....let us know what happens!

Well, it works now. I stipped it down to bare system necessities, and it booted fine. Set the BIOS up, etc. Rebooted, it tried to load up Windows 2000 for some reason, that failed, got a stop error, etc. Kept adding components to see which didn't work right.

Anyway, I set up the CDROM device, make it the first in boot sequence, and now I'm installing WinXP Pro from CD. 😀

Let's hope all goes well. Thanks for your help.

Well, I'm currently installing XP (specifically, formatting the partition). I have a slight problem, nothing significant though. When I power on, the system voice says 'No CPU installed, No CPU installed', then the fans kick in, and it boots. What does this mean? I kind of think I need a CPU installed to run anything, so it seems to be installed. 😀

You could try reseating the CPU and making certain the heatsink is making good contact but it sounds like a power issue. I can't say I've ever experienced a system powering on for the voice diagnostic to work and the fan not run 😕 Weird!
