Computer Won't Shut Down

  1. Overview of the problem
Whenever I try to turn off my computer, it turn back on immediately. Like if I had tried to restart it.

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
I had this problem before, and I'm pretty sure I fixed it by changing a setting in my Motherboard's (DFI nForce4 Ultra-D) BIOS. I had to reset the BIOS and now whenever I turn off the computer (via clicking the button in windows, or hitting the button on the front of the case) it turns right back on. I'm forced to switch the PSU off and than back on from the back.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
Worked fine when I first got the computer, but at some point it started doing this, and I'm pretty sure I fixed it by changing something in the BIOS. It's back because I had to reset the BIOS.

  4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
Happens every time I turn the computer off, short of unplugging it.

  5. I already tried these steps:
Searched the BIOS about ten times. I cant find anything that would affect this.

  6. My software:
    • Operating System and service-pack level: Windows XP Professional Edition with SP3
    • Antivirus: Avast Home
    • Firewall: Router

  7. My hardware
    • DFI nForce4 Ultra-D
    • AMD Opteron 165
    • EVGA 8800 GT
    • G.SKILL 2GB (2x1GB) PC4000
    • SeaSonic S12 600W

Thanks. But none of those fixes seem to help.

On another note. It comes immediately back out of Hibernation and Stand By.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
~ Austin

If I hit the power button on the front before it starts to load Windows, it still reboots instead of turning off. So it would seem like it's not a Windows problem.

Thanks,
~ Austin

I pulled both of my PCI cards (Sound and Wi-Fi), and it turned off correctly. So I popped the wireless card back in and it still turned off correctly. Now I put the Sound Card in too and it still works... Go figure.

Thanks for all the help,
~ Austin
