computer won't recognize graphics card

lagmachine

hi on my old computer i had a radeon 9200 which i gave to a friend and he gave me his old geforce 2 mx. I put the geforce 2 mx into the old computer (its a gateway) and the computer recognizes the card but it encoutners an error when im trying to install. Any reason why it might do that? any help would be appreciated

specs:

pentium 4 1.8 ghz
256 mb rdram
don't know the mobo

Is the card AGP x8 - if so, does your mobo support the x8 (different voltage etc etc)?
Also, is there a molex you need to plug into the vid card?

Not on a Geforce2 MX.
It may not even have a heatsink on it.
I think I saw an OEM one that didn't.
I believe it wouldn't be 8x.
Either 2x
or 2x/4x

Maybe the motherboard's 8x only?
You said OLD, I thought it might be a Pentium2 400.

well the old computer originally came with a geforce 2 mx and i took it out because my friend gave a radeon 9200 to me. But i build my own computer a couple months ago, and the old computer isn't used that much. So i took out the video card and gave it to me friend, and he gave me his old geforce 2 mx. I uninstalled ATI drivers and installed latest Nvidia drivers, but it encounters a problem when i try to install the card. So i tried repairing the windows, but that didn't help. So should i just download latest drivers for motherboard or reinstall the chipset? I don't even know what mobo is in there because its a Gateway.

put old card back in...

uninstall from device manager

turn off and put the geforce 2 in

boot up

should default to generic nvidia drivers

install new nvidia drivers.
