Hi everybody

I just put together a computer with an LGA775 Processor. It ran fine the first day.. but I noticed that it was getting too hot. So the next day, I reattached the heatsink/fan using Arctic Silver 5 instead of the thermal paste it comes with.. After this, it won't even post. When I switch on the computer, the dvd light comes on and the hard drive light comes on...seems like it is initializing....after that nothing. Nothing on display. I don't have a floppy drive. Any idea what could be wrong. Did I damage the CPU/ mother board? Any chance I could rule out this possibility? Could the BIOS have gotten corrupted. The Power supply is an ANTEC 380W TruePower.

Thanks,
UtahBum

Not enough info.

How hot?

Besides leds, are all of the fans spinning? i.e. psu, cpu, vid card, northbridge

Clean off the old thermal pad? Make sure the cpu fan is plugged into the right header.

Do any physical damage to the mb when doing the change? (even laying a heavy heatsink on the mb while working is not a good idea)

The intel utility was displaying upto 75C... so I switched it off. All the fans are spining including the CPU Fan. No fan on the vid card, but the heatsink on the vid card gets warm. I cleaned off the old thermal pad with isoprophyl alc. There is no physical damage to the mobo,, that I can see... I was careful.

Used about a rice grain size amount.

Doesn't this mobo and processor have enough circuitry to prevent any burnout?

It is more important that the actual coating of AS5 is very thin. Its main job is to fill any pits or other hollow spots where the HS doesn't make contact with the chip's cooling surface. A thicker coat of thermal compound will actually impede thermal transfer.

That may be the cause of your problem.

Also, try reseating your vid card and RAM.

I have tried reseating the vid card and memory with no luck. I will try using an even smaller amount of AS5 making sure it spreads out pretty thin and see what happens. BTW if the mobo or processor was damaged (finger crossed)... is this the symptom I would see, Or will the drives and the CPU fan not work in that case?

Well.... found the problem. The memory was on the wrong slot! I moved it to the right one....and everything is hunky dory.

Thanks everybody!
