Computer won't post help!

Just bought a bunch of parts:

amd 64 p3p 3200+
asus a8v deluxe
1 gig corsair twinx
1x 74 gig raptor wd
1x 200 gig seagate sata
1x 6800gt

It won't post, beep, or anything!

With the psu connected, all the fans spin up. The neon lights come on. The processor fan comes on, and the mobo led comes on.

But no beep, and no screen on the monitor.

Anything else I could try to see if my mobo is dead?

you have the 12volt plugged in? Have your keyboard and mouse in the right ports? Asus boards wont boot if they are plugged in wrong. Try unplugging all unnessary excessories.

so far I've been booting without the mouse or keyboard attached. I assumed it would atleast get the bios screen without them, then later complain, am i right? All the psu connections to the mobo have been made by the way.

plug the keyboard and mouse in.. See if that makes a difference. Also try taking the board out of the case and booting it to see if its a grounding issue.

I don't have a different board to try on.

The psu powers up everything, but it won't post, so i don't think it's the problem.

It might be the ram, might not .. right now I've got the system apart to check the cpu for damage, it appears to be fine. I'm too tired to put it all back together to test ram so I think I'm gonna rma the board and try a new one on monday.

:(

Don't give up yet. Fill in my template and I bet I can nail the underlying issue(s) for you.

Fantastic :) Now look at your BIOS chip, located in this location, and it'll have several numbers on it, one of them is the BIOS version that it shipped with. It'll be 100x, such as 1006 or something. What's its revision on yours?

If it is before 1007, then put one memory module in slot DIMM_B1 and see if it'll fire up now. This appears to be a workaround so that you can get the BIOS updated to 1007 or 1008, which gives the board proper Winchester support. If you need an assist with updating the BIOS, I can give more details on the traditional boot-floppy method.

edit: by the way, if it does fire up on one module, go into the BIOS and raise the memory voltage to 2.7 volts, then do a Save & Exit, and let it proceed all the way through the next POST until it stalls, so it knows that the new setting is OK to retain.

Hmm, then you could try the single-module-in-DIMM_B1 trick but that is probably not the issue. If it does work, upgrade to 1008.

Let me ask you some potentially-dumb questions next:
 1. Is the motherboard mounted on standoffs
 2. Is the ATX12V cable plugged into the mobo
 3. Does the 6800GT have its auxiliary-power cable hooked to the power supply
 4. Check that the PSU is set for the right voltage for where you live, 115 volts or 230 volts, on its slider switch (assuming it has one)
*crosses fingers*

I tried booting the system with a single module in the ram slot closest to the processor.

Yes, the board was on the brass standoffs.

I had both the 20 pin main power connector plugged, as well as the 12volt next to the cpu.

The psu IS set for 115 volts.

:(

Is the one by the processor DIMM_B1? I'm over at my folks' house and don't have my A8V Deluxe manual (and I'm on 56k :(). And the 6800GT, it has its power pigtail straight to the power supply too, correct?

If so, then I'm out of easy ideas and sorry to keep you up when you're tired :( Good luck, in any case!

Congrats on getting a really decent power supply, by the way. The last two A8V Deluxe troubleshoots I tried to help with, they had really marginal PSUs to make things extra fun :p

dude.. u r in da BEST as u can be
u get to BIOS >> set everyThing to minimum: such as memory to 100, 133, 166.. (anyThing but 200, or timing relaxed) - will give u idea about your memory

set your voltage as hi as u can.. to see where u r in this DEP. either PSU or MoBo needs more juice

try to remove every card but video (also try to boot w/ PCI card if u have)

check your HardDrive jumpers (master, slave) - and unplug any CD/DVD drives

make sure that floppy (if there is one) is pluged right: someTimes it's easy to mess up last pair while pluging in..

last thing: to post u need (min) mobo, cpu, mem, vid, HD (psu ofCourse) unPlug as much as u can... and start slow - BIOS is good news.. not BAD

You might also check the Clear CMOS jumper just in case it's been shipped to you in the Clear position instead of the normal running position.

Also, if you have another known-working AGP card you could test in the rig, and if you can validate that your 6800GT works in another computer, that helps build your confidence level that the mobo is faulty and needs RMA'ing. Ditto for the RAM, you can try a stick of mild-mannered PC2100 or something in place of the Corsair, and test the Corsair in another DDR-compatible system. The CPU should run with PC2100.

Last gasp: the AGP slots can be pretty stiff when new, sometimes. And there are two layers of contacts in there. I'm sure you already checked the seating of the video card, but just in case... ream it in firmly.

good point about CMOS jumper, but AGP issue should be handled by BEEPS from mobo as well as RAM
