Computer wont post due to change in FSB??

Hello, I was checking my settings on my computer because it seemed to be running differently. I checked Bios and realized that somehow my CPU was only running at 100mhz fsb and clocking at 1350. So instead of playing it safe and changing it back to 133, I decided to try out 166..... Now my computer will not even POST, I fear the worst but do not know really what could of fried or whatnot. I swapped my Athlon XP 2200+ in someone else's computer and it worked so I didn't fry that. Anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to fix this or can tell me what I destroyed and have to buy again. So far I've cleared CMOS, took out battery in motherboard to reset BIOS, checked all connections. Thanks,

What does ur cmos default to? What motherboard are you using what CPU are you using?

Im using a MSI K7N2-L NVIDIA NFORCE 2 MOTHERBOARD with a AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8 Ghz). I'm not positive what you mean by cmos default to but it was not defaulted to clear. Also, this motherboard supports way past 166mhz fsb so I cant see my motherboard frying because of that. Thanks

For some reason I have doubts that a Palomino or Tbred-A core can do 13.5x 166 with ease.

Just reset the CMOS battery and dont indulge yourself next time.

I wasn't trying to overclock, it was a stupid mistake. I hadn't messed with my bios since I built the computer and I thought it ran on 166. Im just an amateur when it comes to building computers so please educate me on what you mean by Palomino or Tbred-A core?

Newest to oldest...Barton, TBred, Palo. Why don't you try reading your motherboard manual, eh? And if you don't know how to reset your CMOS, you're not ready to start messing with the BIOS yet. Do some research before oclocking, lest you really do ruin anything.

What the hell does resetting the CMOS have to do with the BIOS? I have never reset the CMOS until just a few weeks ago because frankly I didnt need to.

The easiest way to reset the CMOS is to pop out the battery on your motherboard (make sure its off and disconnected from power). Hold it in your hand for a minute. Put it back in. Boot, and everything should be set to default.

You need to switch a safe mode jumper on board. Read the manual nforce 2 has a bug when you up the fsb to high. Resetting cmos won't bring the fsb back down.

It's called the fsb mode jumper set it to 100Mhz default is 133Mhz. Then set it back to 133 after you've gone in the bios and set the fsb to a 100. THen go back to the bios and
set the fsb to 133. Leave fsb cpu frequency jumper shorted for 133/166 cpu's open for 100mhz cpus.

Resetting the CMOS will bring the FSB back down, along with reseting all settings to Fail safe or Optimal defualts...

I do know how to reset your CMOS and yes I have read the manual. I've taken the battery out for 5min then put it back in to see if that would work and no luck. I see in the manual about the fsb mode jumper. I will do as you say and see if that works. It might take a bit because I have to go to friends house to jump on internet.

I am now typing from my own computer ! Switching the jumpers the way you described Viper worked great, and then after I could boot my computer I went back into Bios and set the fsb to the correct value of 133 enabling it to run at 2200+ again. Thanks alot for all the help and suggestions everyone !

You can also try pressing CTRL as you boot up to reset the settings for the bios. If you're going to take out the CMOS battery, unplug the computer as well, so that all power sources to the motherboard are invalid, and then see if that works.
