computer won't boot!!!

not exactly sure what happened last night but i pulled out my ipod usb adapter from the front of the tower and moved it to the rear. next thing i know, i lost usb where my mouse is plugged in. so i shut down my computer using the computer. when i turned it back on, i don't have display. my mouse doesn't light up, so there's no usb either. could it be my mobo just crapped out on me?

i have p4 2.4
msi motherboard
some generic video card
and i have a pretty good surge protector
and a pretty good power supply 480 watt (forgot the brand, but it was a pretty good one)

any idea as to what it could be?

thanks!
tony

There is power to the whole tower, fans, CPU. What does POST mean?? I don't hear that initial beep that the motherboard usually makes. Now sure if there is power to the hdd..how can you check?

POST stands for Power On Self Test, it is the series of beeps you hear when the PC starts and a way for your PC to check that everything is good to go before the OS loads. You should be able to tell if the hdd's have power either by listening, or by LED activity. But sounds like you are completely out of power. Maybe your PSU went out. Do you have one you can swap to check?

thanks mcurphy,

i'm not sure whether the PSU is blown or not, but i don't really see that happening this randomly. I'll try and do some troubleshooting and post back later.

so i just ran through that test w/ just the minimum

cpu, mobo, power supply, one stick of ram and video card. i don't hear any beeps on boot, but the computer does power on. does this mean one of the main components is not working?

thanks!

i swapped ram..that wasn't the issue either.

let me get this straight...so even w/ the bare minimum

cpu, mobo, power supply, ram, video card w/ NO harddrives. i should still hear beeps on power on? or see something on the monitor? won't I hear a beep even w/o the video card?

thanks

okay just swapped power supply and vid card..it looks like its either the chip or mobo...IF SOMEONE COULD ANSWER THIS, THAT WOULD BE GREAT!
