have not added ,or downloaded anything, did a little surfing last night, and this morning-- message reads, "while initializing device VKD windows protection error, you need to restart your computer. Safe mode doesn't work, restoring a previous registry doesn't work.Tried fail safe bios, cleared cmos, the only thing I can think of to do is reload windows, but none of my boot disks seem to allow cd-rom access. Guess I could go to a friends house and download the UBD (ultimate boot disk),and try again. Your thoughts as to what happend???? , what else to try???, some kind of virus???

If you boot from a floppy, can you access the hard drive? Sounds like either Windows got corrupted somehow or you had a drive crash.

the only reason I would boot with floppy is to have cd rom drivers, which alas, none of my disks seem to have. perhaps if I disconnect the sound on the cd????
I CAN access the hard drive using command prompt only, and yes I have done a full scan with no probs found.
btw this is a 98se machine
"windows corrupt SOMEHOW" me thinks so. hopefully a reload should do the trick.

I finaly got access to the cd, reinstalled part of windows (98se), but when it asked for a re-start, I was back to the old message "windows protection error, while intializing device vkd. Restart computer". My hard drive is new 80 gig Western Digital with 8mb cache. Does anyone know what "vkd" stands for? This vkd thing seems to be stopping me cold and can't seem to get around it. This is the first time I haver ever been stopped dead in the water.

I see said the blind man! VKD as in KEYBOARD!!! mine obviously,(or not quite so,for I was still able to use it)went south. Tried a different keyboard and bingo, all is well. Funny, I've lost keyboards before and was able assertain what
went wrong, and nowhere in my vast Liberary did I find VKD,found it at microsoft archieve site.
Just when I thought I knew something about computers I spend 4 hours solving something so simple, and yes that
is a tail between my legz as I runz away.

BTW, MRS.runzwithlistochorz, and I wish all the good folkz at Anandtech and you posterz a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
