Computer wont boot with a usb device plugged in

when a usb device is plugged in, the comuputer will start to post, but freeze before the memory counts. it only does this with a usb device in any of the usb ports...nothing else has duplicated this situation.

p4 1.6a
pc2100 mushkin 2.5-3-3-7
asus MB (cant rmember exactly)
g2 mx400

those are the basic system specs...

what is causing this?

Off-the-cuff speculative guesswork suggestion: go into the BIOS and disable Legacy USB Support. If you can nail down what Asus motherboard it is, I can help you find it if you aren't able to locate it, but I think it'll be in Integrated Peripherals.
