hi
my computer must've buped into things on its way to college, cause when i opened the case the heatsink/fan had broken off, and possibly knocked into something
i put it back on (twsty tie :] ), computer starts up, no beeps, no video, all fans running, harddrives boot up, but it stops there
no bios screen or anything ..nothing on the screen at all except for that monitor "you have no video" screen
i have an iwill xp333-r mobo in RAID striped mode (80gb), 2 sticks of 256mb ddr ram (one pc2100 other pc2400), and an athlon xp 1700 . ..

i dont know how to see if the processor has fried or if it is broken. if i look really close there MIGHT be a very tiny piece in the corner of the chip that isnt there, but i dunno. . .and underneath the processor in the center, it is a little darker, a little blacker than the rest of it (fried?)

PLEASE HELP!!!

You put a heatsync on with a twist tie?!!!

What type of CPU are you running? If it is AMD its probbably fried. Intel CPUs usually will freeze without adequete cooling (therefore no video).

EDIT: Doh didn't see that xp333 thing. Umm yea AMD procs need a lot of pressure from the heatsync (like 20-25 pounds) so I don't think that twist tie would do it. I'm gonna bet its fried unless AMDs thermal diode actually worked (haven't seen anything to that effect yet). I bet you can find someone with a SocketA cpu that you can test around a college campus.

But defintely sounds like a CPU issue to me.

An Athlon will fry in about 2 seconds (give or take about a half second...yes, really) without a heatsink.

If you so much as booted that thing once without a heatsink it's done.

That was true for the Tbird series the Palimino has slightly better thermal protection. You got a good 4 seconds until those burn up :)

Anyway if it is fried it should be real obvious you know deformed silicon, discolored PCB you know... If you can't read the cpu speed on the core your defintely fried.

i can read the speed and all that, nothing seems to be melted ..the only thing is that on the backside of the processor, in the center, it is kinda black ...or darker than the original brownish .. ..

took out the ram and the processor, still the same .. . .gonna go try the video now
thx for hte suggestions

if not ill just buy an athlon xp 2000 for 95 bucks

ok, thanks
so i get a new cpu then . . .but how should i attach the heatsink? it broke off, one of the plastic thingies that holds it down got pulled off ..there are 3 plastic things on each side though, so i might be able to find one that uses the 2 others

Get a good heatsink, and if it doesn't work then you just buy a cheap OEM version of the processor, the prices are down now!

I hope this helps.
