computer wont boot, CPU or MOBO fried ?

my computer wont boot up, actually, when i press the power button, the fans will only stay on for about .5-1 second, then shuts down.

this problem just started when i was trying to put a new heatsink/fan on my CPU. Took the computer apart, put the new Zalman fan on the chip, hooked everything back up again, and now it wont work.

I did try disconnecting all drives and RAM, still wont post the BIOS.

Interestingly, when i remove the CPU chip, the fans will stay on, but once i set the chip back in place and restart, it shuts down again immediately after powering up.

i tried another power supply with no help, so that isnt the problem.

any way to test if i fubared the CPU or motherboard?

please help me
 
hi, you do have the cpu fan connected to "cpu fan" on the motherboard right? just a stupid possibility, lol. try to clear the cmos and see what happens, did you release a static discharge or something when you worked on it? is this the a64 in your sig or a different cpu?
 
yes, this is the computer im having trouble with below.

fan is plugged in, and will work fine when i disconnect the CPU from the motherboard. once i reseat the chip into the mobo, it will not boot at all... only will run for about .5 seconds

i did try my best to discharge static while i was working, i hope that isnt it
 
^^up to make sure its clear it only runs for 1/2 a second before shutting down.


i just noticed the decimal in the .5 above is hard to notice.
 
reset bios? If you pulled anything and tryed starting it up, you'll probally have to do this anyways.

remember, some mobos require you to install the cpu fan to the furthest 3-pin power (like on my kt7a)
 
I had something like this happen when I rebuilt with an socket 478 board with a Celeron 2.9. The fan/heatsink came with what looked like a big pad of heatsink compound, so I just popped it onto the CPU. Got the same symptoms you describe.

I took off the heatsink, and it looked like the pad of compound hadn't fully contacted the CPU, so I scraped the gunk off, and just put the bare fan/heatsink on the CPU. Then it ran fine. I theorize that without good heatsinking, the CPU was going into thermal overload almost instantly on powerup.

It now runs fine, though a little warm. As soon as I can find my tube of Arctic Silver, I'll thermal paste it.

So, check you heatsink and thermal paste.
