Computer will not start.

Last night, when I tried to shut down my computer, it went to the windows shut down screen and stopped there. I heard the hard disk spin down, but it just stayed at the "windows is shutting down" screen. I pressed the power button for 5 seconds and it did nothing. I pressed the reset button and it rebooted into windows, and when I tried to shut down the same thing happened. This time when I reset it, I pressed the power button during post and the computer was suspended. ALT+CTRL+DEL didn't do anything, and neither did pressing the power button for 5 seconds. So I finally got frustrated and pulled the power. Now, the computer won't start. I press the power button and nothing happens. Plug/unplug power and nothing happens. I even tried taking the power button connector off and using a screwdriver to boot, nothing.

Strange problem... what is most likely wrong, how can I find out? It shouldn't be the PSU, should it, since it was working in windows fine.

It could be the power supply, if it's dying it will start doing strange things like that. Try unplugging it for about a half hour, then plug it back in and see if you can get it to power up.

Update: I tested the power supply by connecting the PS-ON to a ground wire using a bent paperclip. The PSU turned on fine, and the fan was spinning. I then tested the voltages with a multimeter and they were all relatively normal (one 12V was 12.8, a bit high...).

Still, the same problem persists/

You can't run Windows on a paperclip. 😉

If your PSU is not a pretty good name-brand unit (Antec, Enermax, Fortron, Sparkle Power) then my suggestion is to use this as an excuse to pick up a respectable-brand unit. Worst-case scenario, you're stuck with a high-quality power supply for the future AND still need a new _________________ (hard drive or motherboard, most likely). Hope that helps 🙂

I just meant tested on a paperclip to make sure it starts at all, and it did. 🙂

It is Antec, and earlier today I verified that it did indeed work. I tested the PSU in another computer and vise versa, and tested the CPU in another computer and vise versa. After that I must conclude that it is probably the motherboard that's dead. It's a K7S5A... guess they got me back for being so cheap and buying a $50 board afterall.

I'll get some kind of nForce 2 board soon, I suppose. Which ones are good? And cheap... haha, I guess I havn't learned my lesson on the cheapness.

No worries, my K7S5A kicked the bucket a while back and I had no regrets... got my moneys' worth out of that $56 wonderboard, that's for sure 😎 Check out the Shuttle AN35N Ultra, it's been out long enough that we'd know if it were a lemon, but it's actually a great budget overclocker board and is about $55 🙂 I have one myself.
