In WindowsXp Professional edition, for some reason when I goto shutdown my PC, it will not shutdown. Instead, it reboots!!?? I've tried messing with the power management functions but have not been successful in getting it to shut off. Odd thing though, I had to go into Safe Mode a little while ago and when I was logging off Safe Mode, I tried the "Turn Off Computer" function and Wallaa, it turned off. So I went back into WinXP nromally and tried to shut it down, and nope, wouldn't do it. What is the deal here? I even tried the "Restart" button to see if the software had them backwards or something, but it restarted the computer as well. Weird. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

I haven't seen that in pro, but in win98 there is usually something running that isn't shutting off like it should. Anti virus, printer monitor programs, scanners are some of the things. Also internet spyware like comet cursor, gator, save now and file sharing programs can screw up a shut down. Try and see what is running and shut as much as you can manually. You might try ad-aware too.

Thanks for the reply Red. I think I know what you might be talking about. Those programs usually will keep the computer from shutting down, out of Windows. The problem I am having is that when i hit the Shutdown button in Windows XP Pro, the computer exits Windows, but instead of the computer shutting off completely (no power), it reboots the machine instead. Kinda like if I were to hit the Restart button. It reboots opposed to actually killing power to the system. Any other ideas? TIA

If you're using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 or Direct CD 5.0 then try updating to the latest release as it can cause that issue, another potential culprit if you have an AMI bios is PME Event Wakeup is enabled, Also uncheck automatically restart under the stratup and recovery tab in windows. Another setting to disable in the bios is wake on LAN if it's enabled. If none of that resolves it then try updating to the latest bios for you motherboard, HTH :)

Think if one keeps the shut down button depressed for about 5 or 6 seconds the puter actually shuts down rather than reboots. In 3 years I have only shut down the puter mayby three times, seti now has about 1100 work units done!

Yes Criter, that will be the result. But ponder this, if I do that while in WinXP then I will run the risk of corrupting Windows data by not 'properly' exiting WinXP. The correct way would be to hit the shutdown button and allow the PC to shut itself off after properly exiting WinXP. This is when it restarts opposed to shutting down.

DAPUNISHER, thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately for me, none of them worked. Interestingly enough though, when I disabled "automatically restart" when it went to shutdown, it gave me a blue screen in XP. That is the first time I had seen that in XP. I had to turn it back on. Any other ideas? Thx!

What did the BSOD say exactly? They can be very helpful in determining the cause of the problem so if you could post it we'll have more to work with.

Yes, go to

Anandtech's primary pic hosting site once the site upgrade is finished (should be by the time you see this) and make an account then upload it as a .gif or .jpg and name it error or the like and the use the http feature in your message options to link to it.

This MSKB article is extremely close to the error you're getting Link and points to Logitech iTouch drivers needing to be updated. If you aren't using logitech input devices the message is close enough to suggest what ever brand you are using probably is causing the problem and their drivers should be updated. Good luck and post back with how you make out :)

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!

DAPUNISHER, your last suggection fixed my problem. Unbelievable. I would have never thought in a hundred years that my iTouch keyboard would have kept my PC from shutting down, and instead reboot. This is crazy. I got the latest drivers for my iTouch keyboard and optical wheel mouse, both from Logitech and WAALLAAAA!!! It shuts down now.

DAPUNISHER, thank you a million times over for your assistance! I have been busting my brains out over this for 3 days now. Thanks bro!!!

No problemo, Glad it's running smooth now :D BTW, for future reference, keep the auto restart unchecked and that way if you get a BSOD you can write it down and go to Google and look it up to see what it means ;)

Sweet, great tip!

PUN, do you dabble with Athlon XP processor's at all? My last hang-up with this newly built system is with tinkering with FSB adjustments. I'm not having any luck. If you are, here's the thread...

FSB Adjustments

Thanks bro!
