Computer Will Not Post...

Well my computer was working before I did all the work... I recently bought me a Antec p180 case and I transfered all my internals from my older case to my newer case but now when I plug up the power I turn on the computer and the computer gets power, the power led turns on, the hard drive led turns on and lastly the computer does not show anything on the screen from the normal stuff... what could be wrong?

Well, if the comp is not posting the the motherboard should give off a series of beeps, which is a code that you can look up in your motherboards manual ( some motherboards have led's that flash a code too). Look up what the beeps maean in your motherboard manual. This will give you a good idea of what is wrong. If there are no beeps or led lights then disconnect all non essential items. The only things you need to post are CPU, 1 stick of RAM, video card, and a keyboard. Try that and see if you can post. If you can then add in additional peripherals and items (hard drives, extra ram, soundcard etc).

Agree with nchavie - and would add that any one of those items missing can prevent POST from happening. The most commong fault is that the DIMM is not properly seated. When that happens, you get usually zilch.

This in my mind is not the symtom of not posting---when your computer does not post, your symtom is that when you turn on the power, the bios does some sort of self check,
and shuts itself down.----in my case this was bery rapid---the fans would turn about a third of a turn before the bios shut everything down.

Other than that vocabulary problem, its now a troubleshooting problem. With the question being---what is wrong with a computer that was working before. While a very small probability always exists that your computer picked this time to crap out, it seems to me you must ask what is new---and what hookup could have gone wrong?

Some questions

1. You got a new case---does it have a new power supply that could be defective?

2. Did you remove the ram from the motherboard in the transplant? If not, its probably not the problem.

3. Can you boot to dos with a floppy or CD rom?-------in which case its probably not reading the hard drive for some reason.---but if you can get to dos--you can do a lot of things
to troubleshoot.---and can you get into windows safe mode?

4. Could it be that the computer is booting normally and you just have nothing on the monitor?---as in hard drive light flashes and eventually stops flashing.

5. I assume you r&r any expansion cards---are they seated properly now.---and in the same slots as they were before?---if not you could have an IRQ assignment conflict.

6. Is the motherboard shorting against the case somewhere.

There are lots of things you can do to narrow things down.

its likely something just isn't seated good. Also if you have a video card that requires 4/6 pin power connector make sure you didn't forget to connect that because your system will not post without it in most cases.

As mentioned above the mobo could be shorting against the case. I've seen this a time or 10.

ok I got it running and all I did was remove the wireless networking card...


Can you use nylon ties too tightly binded to the cables?
